An independent program enabling communication between all servers in the system.

An SAP system consisting of any number of application servers contains precisely one message server.

A dual stack system (consisting of instances with AS ABAP and AS Java) can be operated with two separate message servers (for ABAP and AS Java) , or with one message server (as part of the SCS instance). The message server has the following tasks:

Administration of the server list of the system's application servers and their statuses

Internal communication between the application servers

AS ABAP: Assignment of an application server when user logs on (load balancing)
