Procedure documentationConfirm or Deactivate ASR Overflow Protection

BW-based reporting and other applications extract ABAP statistics (ASR) from managed systems, into the Business Warehouse assigned to the SAP Solution Manager. Depending on the usage of the managed systems, this can involve the transfer of very large amounts of data. To avoid such an impairment of the SAP Solution Manager, there is an ASR overload protection which automatically restricts the volume of data. The data is compressed by the removal of details, which reduces the system load, but some information which may be important for reporting applications, is also lost (see Configuring ASR Overflow Protection).

When overflow protection is activated for an ASR profile in a managed systemwird, the system sends a message in the BW-Based Reporting Self-Monitoring. The message is entitled ABAP Stat. Data Overflow; Protection Active. It is sent in the scenario System Reports in the Self-Checks tab, under Checking the Data Volume of ABAP Statistics Records.

If the status was red, a large volume of data has been extracted from the system, and activated the overload protection. This error occurs if there is so much ABAP statistics data to be transferred to the BW for an administered system that its volume causes performance problems during the following tasks:

  • when transferring the data from the affected administered system to the Solution Manager system and the BW

  • when calling reports whiche use data from the ASR profile

Procedure

You have the following ways of solving this problem, in the drop-down list box Solve Problem, after the message long text. Choose the method whose description best matches your managed system:

  • The threshold value for the quantity of transferred ABAP statistics data was only exceeded in a one-off system situation. You do not expect this situation to recur. In this case, you can deactivate the reaggregation described above so that all reports are correctly supplied with the required data again.

To perform this step, in the dropdown list box, choose Start of the navigation path Solve Problem Next navigation step Ignore Once End of the navigation path.

  • You expect the threshold value for the quantity of transferred ABAP statistics data to be exceeded again in the future. However, your IT infrastructure, in terms of the performance of the affected systems and the network connection between these systems, is sufficiently powerful that you do not need to worry about the data collection and report display causing any problems. In this case, you can deactivate the compression described above, so that all reports are again correctly supplied with the required data. You should also deactivate this check, so that if the threshold value is exceeded again in the future, this has no consequences.

To perform this step, in the dropdown list box, choose Start of the navigation path Solve Problem Next navigation step Always Ignore End of the navigation path.

  • You expect the threshold value for the quantity of transferred ABAP statistics data to be exceeded again in the future, and to reliably avoid the possible problems associated with this, you accept permanent compression. This means that you do not save the affected aggregates. Reports which use this aggregate are no longer shown (these aggregates and reports are specified in the message long text).

To perform this step, in the dropdown list box, choose Start of the navigation path Solve Problem Next navigation step Accept Restrictions End of the navigation path.
