Background documentationC. Implementing Landscape Changes

  • Installing New Software with Software Provisioning Manager (SWPM)

SWPM performs new installations, uninstallations, system copies, and system transformations. It is part of Software Logistics Toolset. It is used for all SAP NetWeaver-based systems, which are systems either based on SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP, or SAP NetWeaver AS Java, or on a dual-stack system. For example, you can also create a test or sandbox system as a copy from of an existing system.

For more information, see http://service.sap.com/sltoolsetInformation published on SAP site and http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-30236Information published on SAP site.

  • Support Package Manager (SPAM)

With the support package manager, you can install support packages in SAP systems.

The tool consumes the stack XML that was created by Maintenace Planner. (Though also the tools SPAM and SAINT can consume stack XMLs, using SUM is highly recommended; see SAP Note 1803986Information published on SAP site: Rules to use SUM or SPAM and SAINT to apply SPs for ABAP stacks.)

  • Installing add-ons with the SAP Add-On Installation Tool (SAINT)

With SAINT, you can install and upgrade add-ons directly in an SAP system.

For more information, see http://service.sap.com/sltoolsetInformation published on SAP site.

  • Software Update Manager (SUM)

Software Update Manager (SUM) installs updates and add-ons. It controls different kinds of implementation processes, such as upgrading SAP systems, installing enhancement packages, or and applying support package stacks. It is part of the Software Logistics Toolset (SL Toolset). SUM replaces previous tools like SAPehpi, SAPup,SAPJup, JSPM, CEupdateManager, and SolManUp.

  • Note Assistant

The Note Assistant (transaction SNOTE) helps you to handle SAP notes. When you have loaded the notes which are of interest to you, into your system, you can implement the corrections in these notes, automatically.

For more information, see Note Assistant.

  • When you change existing systems, you also have to consider the following topics:

    • Downtime management

    • Database migration

    • Unicode migration
