Note Note

CA and SAP have an agreement allowing you to use Introscope with SAP-developed dashboards and instrumentation as part of SAP Solution Manager.

If you would like to increase the benefits of Introscope through custom dashboards and instrumentation, or extend Introscope's capabilities with Introscope Powerpacks™, you can purchase SAP Extended Diagnostics by CA through SAP. To learn more, see SAP Note 1280961Information published on SAP site.

End of the note.

The available components for Introscope are Enterprise Manager, Agent, Workstation, and WebView. The setup, installation, and configuration of these components are described in SAP Note 797147Information published on SAP site. The components serve the following purposes:

Introscope Component

Description

Enterprise Manager

The Enterprise Manager (EM) acts as the central repository for all Introscope performance data and metrics collected in an application environment. The EM processes performance data and makes it available to users for production monitoring and diagnosis.

Agent

Introscope agents collect performance metrics from the various components inside the running Web application, the application server and performance and availability data from the surrounding computing environment. The agents then report these metrics to the Enterprise Manager.

Workstation

The user controls Introscope and accesses performance metrics through the Introscope Workstation. Users can set alerts for individual metrics or logical metric groups, view performance metrics, and customize views to represent their unique environment. The Introscope Workstation has a Swing-based UI, for onsite or in-house use only

WebView

Introscope WebView presents Web-based graphical UI to display Introscope performance data. Introscope's customizable dashboards and Explorer tree views for authorized users run in a browser interface, so that critical information can be viewed by those who need it anytime, anywhere. Note that the WebView component requires the Adobe SVG Viewer browser plug-in to display performance data.

You can also install CA Introscope Enterprise Manager if, for example, the capacity of the existing Enterprise Manager is exhausted, or passwords have changed. Furthermore, you can link existing CA Introscope Enterprise Manager instances to SAP Solution Manager.

Prerequisites

To be able to use SAP Introscope components, install and configure the components as described in the setup guide and in SAP Note 797147Information published on SAP site. The setup guide is available on SAP Service Marketplace at http://service.sap.com/instguidesInformation published on SAP site Start of the navigation path Installation & Upgrade Guides Next navigation step SAP Components Next navigation step SAP Solution Manager Next navigation step <current release> End of the navigation path.

Features

To use the following Introscope features, start the Launchpad, and in the group SAP Solution Manager Administration, choose the tile CA Introscope - EM Administration.

  • The Configuration tab page shows a list of all the configured CA Enterprise Manager instances with their status and main configuration settings. Use this tab page to Connect existing CA Introscope Enterprise Manager instances to SAP Solution Manager.

  • The Performance tab page displays the value of the key performance metrics of Introscope Enterprise Manager over a specific period.

You can view the values for the following metric types by choosing the Display pushbutton.

    Metric

    Description

    Number of Agents

This metric indicates the number of agents that are connected to the selected Enterprise Manager.

    EM CPU Usage in Percent

This metric indicates the CPU utilization caused by the Enterprise Manager.

    GC Duration in Milliseconds

This metric indicates the garbage collection duration for the Java Virtual Machine on which the Enterprise Manager is running.

    Heap Capacity in Percent

This metric indicates the heap capacity for the Java Virtual Machine on which the Enterprise Manager is running.

    Number of Metrics

This metric indicates the number of metrics known to the selected Enterprise Manager. This number decreases as soon as an Introscope agent disconnects from the Enterprise Manager.

    Number of Metrics Processed

This metric indicates the number of metrics that were processed by the Enterprise Manager within a 15 second interval. Although it may fluctuate statistically, this metric on average should be equal to the number of metrics described above. If the number of metrics processed tends to be less than the number of known metrics, this is an indication that the Enterprise Manager is overloaded because the incoming data cannot be processed quickly enough.

    Total Capacity in Percent

This metric is calculated from various other metrics to represent the total Enterprise Manager load. It is based on the CPU utilization, garbage collection, and heap. This metric, therefore, indicates potential overloads but not their cause. In order to identify the cause, you need to examine the underlying metrics.

Duration of the SmartStor Queries in Milliseconds

SmartStor is a data storage technology from Introscope that stores all of the Introscope metrics. A SmartStor query is used to read data from the SmartStor. These queries are used by the Introscope extractor, for example, to extract data for analyzing the system load.

    SmartStor Capacity in Percent

This metric indicates the capacity of the SmartStor. It compares the runtime to 15 seconds and outputs the result as a percentage. If the runtime is equal to 15 seconds, for example, the capacity is 100%.
