Function documentationCreating Alert Types from New MAI Metrics

Note Note

This section is part of the Extend Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure with CCMS Metrics process. This process shows how you can extend technical monitoring with additional, previously not monitored CCMS metrics. Perform the previous steps in the process.

End of the note.

In the previous step Creating MAI Metrics from CCMS Metrics, you have created a MAI metric in a customer template. This section tells you how to create an alert in the same template for the newly created metric.

Activities

You create the alert for a customer metric in the same template as the metric. This template must be open in expert editing mode. For information about creating and editing templates, see Using Templates.

Create New Alert

To create an alert in this template, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose Start of the navigation path Create Next navigation step Alert End of the navigation path. A customer alert creation wizard starts.

  2. Enter the general attributes of the new alert in the Overview tab:

    Attribute

    Comments

    Name

Descriptive alert name; the alert is displayed in technical monitoring under this name

    Category

Category to which the metric thematically belongs. Possible categories are Availability, Performance, Configuration, Exception and Self-Monitoring. Ensure that the alert has the same category as your customer metric.

    Severity

The seriousness of the alert on a scale from 0 - Very Low to 9 - Critical.

    Do not group occurrences

If this flag is not set, alerts with the same rating (red or yellow) for a managed object, are grouped in an alert group in the alert inbox. You can display further information about this flag.

    Active

    Do not change this entry.

    Technical Name

Specify a technical name for the alert. The name must be in customer namespace, so it starts with Z.

    Customer description

Enter a description of your alert.

  3. Specify how the system is to respond to the occurrence of the new alert, in the Messages tab, Notifications and Third-Party Components. For more information, see:

  4. In the Rule tab, you specify how the alert color is determined if the alert has several metrics assigned to it. The most common rule is the Worst Case Rule, in which the alert is rated as the worst rating of the metrics which contribute to it.

  5. Go to the second step (Assignments) of the customer alert creation wizard. You can assign a metric to the alert. The table shows all metrics of the same category which are not yet assigned to an alert. Choose the metric you created in Creating MAI Metrics from CCMS Metrics.

    Note Note

To assign several metrics to an alert, keep the CTRL key pressed while you select metrics.

    End of the note.

Choose Finish, to complete the creation of the alert.

  6. Save your template.

Rename New Event

You have created an alert for your new metric. wird The status of metrics is passed in MAI to a consolidation event, whose status determines the alert. You can display this structure in Metrics, Events, Alert Hierarchy tab, in the template management.

The difference between event and alert is that an event is displayed in the System Monitoring hierarchy, to group the underlying metrics. The status of the event can be any color (depending on the status of the metrics), so the event name is neutral, for example ABAP Instance Availability. The alert is shown in the alert inbox, if it is yellow or red. The name of the alert indicates that an error has occurred, for example ABAP Instance Not Available.

When you created the alert and assigned it to the metric in the previous step, an associated consolidation event with the same name as the alert was created automatically. As an event and its alert are not semantically identical, as described above, change the name of the event. Proceed as follows in the template management (the template is open for editing in expert mode):

  1. Go to the Metrics, Events, Alert Hierarchy tab.

  2. Find the newly created alert, and expand its subtree. The automatically created consolidation event is below the alert.

  3. Select the consolidation event of the alert, and change the name so that it matches an event (is independent of the status).

  4. Save your template.

More Information

You have made the required changes to the customer template. To use the new metric and its alert in technical monitoring, assign the template to managed objects, and activate the assignment. This is described in Using Templates.
