Procedure documentationAnalyzing Downtimes

In SAP Solution Manager, you can use work modes. These work modes specify downtimes for the managed systems and the reasons for the downtimes (technical work modes), as well as different types of business hours (business work modes). For more information, see: Managing Work Modes.

Three different reports are available to allow you to analyze the downtimes of your managed systems:

  • Analyze Length of Downtimes of Multiple Systems

You can display an overview of the length of the downtimes for your managed systems, and can freely define the time period to be analyzed This report does not display when the downtimes occurred, it says which systems were not available, and for how long. The lengths of the following downtime types are displayed:

    • Planned Downtime

    • Used planned downtime (that is, the time for which the system was actually unavailable during a planned downtime)

    • Unplanned downtime

You can therefore compare the length of the planned downtime with the actual downtime.

  • Analyze Downtimes of a System or an Instance During one Week

You can compare the actual availability of an individual system or an instance for a particular week with the valid work modes. You can use this information to answer the following questions, for example:

    • Were the planned downtimes correct?

    • For how long during the planned downtimes was the system actually unavailable?

    • Were there unplanned downtimes, and if so, when?

    • Did downtimes occur during the peak business times or the normal business hours?

Procedure

Displaying the Length of Downtimes of Multiple Systems

To display the length of downtimes of multiple systems, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Technical Administration or SAP Solution Manager Administration work center, choose the Work Mode Management entry in the navigation area.

  2. A list of the managed systems appears; select the systems for which you want to display the downtimes, and choose Downtime Reporting. You can display this function in the work center itself (Embedded) or in a (New Fenster Window).

  3. The following periods are output in the report, for the selected systems:

    • Planned duration of downtime

    • Actual duration of downtime

    • Duration of unplanned downtime

    • Total downtime

    Note Note

The actual planned downtime is the total of the downtimes that were measured during the planned downtimes. Correspondingly, the unplanned downtime is the total of the downtimes that were measured outside the planned downtimes.

    End of the note.

You can sort the displayed systems by any of the displayed values. You can display the downtimes in hours or minutes. The details relate to the selected report period. By default, this is the last three full months.

  4. If you display the downtimes of more than 20 systems, you can restrict the systems whose downtimes are displayed, in a slider under the graphic. You can use the slider to display more, less, or other systems. This keeps the graphic legible.

  5. You can change the time period for which the lengths of downtimes are displayed by choosing the desired start and end dates and choosing the Refresh button.

Analyze Downtimes of a System or an Instance During one Week

To display the downtimes of a system or of an instance, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Technical Administration or SAP Solution Manager Administration work center, choose the Work Mode Management entry in the navigation area.

  2. A list of the managed systems appears; select the desired systems, and choose the Work Mode Management button. You can display this function in the work center itself (Embedded) or in a new window (Open New Window).

  3. Select the technical system or instance for which you want to analyze the downtimes, expand the area Current Work Modes in Calendar, and choose the time period by choosing the number of the calendar week.

  4. The work modes for the chosen week are displayed in a separate area. To display the downtimes for this week, choose the button Planned Downtime Analysis.

  5. The report compares the planned downtimes for the selected system or instance during the selected week with the actual measured availability. The other work modes for the selected week are also displayed, and compared with the actual measured availability. You can exclude the work modes that are not required, by deselecting the corresponding indicator below the graphic.

You can also adjust the weeks for which the data is displayed. Enter either the calendar day on which the week starts, or go to the next or previous week, with the arrow keys.
