The Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI) monitors the performance and status of systems, in complex, heterogeneous landscapes. You configure it centrally in the SAP Solution Manager system, in the transaction SOLMAN_SETUP. There are default values, which you can usually use.

This section contains advice which goes beyond the default configuration and scope of MAI.

The MAI documentation contains detailed advice about the following processes:

Monitoring Log Files

MAI can monitor selected log files, even with default settings. SAP delivers various data providers. You can enhance these default functions by creating metrics and alerts in your own templates, based on the delivered data providers. You have the following monitoring possibilities:

  • Monitor log files in various SAP standard formats, for the number of messages of specified severity, and containing specified search patterns.

  • Monitor the contents of any files for the number of occurrences of specified search patterns.

  • Monitor the general attributes, such as size, and when changed, of files identified by a name pattern.

For information about enhancing the default scope of MAI to monitor other log files, see Monitoring Log Files with the Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure. Create metrics based on the delivered data providers, and assign values to the input parameters of these metrics.

Adding CCMS Metrics to the Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure

The CCMS Monitoring Infrastructure contains a lot of metrics which are available in MAI in various templates delivered by SAP. There are also other CCMS metrics which you can display locally in the Alert Monitor, which are not in MAI by default. You can put these metrics in MAI by creating them in customer templates and assigning the templates to managed objects.

For more information, see Adding CCMS Metrics to the Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure.

Optimize Performance of Event Calculation

The core of E2E Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI) is the Event Calculation Engine, which performs the most important MAI calculations. It runs every minute by default. To improve the performance of this job, see Optimize Performance of Event Calculation.

Operating system command adapter

The operating system command adapter uses third-party Incident Management tools to create or close tickets from alerts, in the SAP Solution Manager alerting infrastructure. You can create and execute OS commands in your SAP Solution Manager system, to create alert information in third-party tools, and pass it to them. You can, for example, do the following:

  • Write information in a log file

  • Run additional BS scripts in the SAP Solution Manager system

To use the OS command adapter to create OS commands, create a BAdI implementation containing the alerting information to be processed by the OS command. For more information, see Operating System Command Adapter.

Remote Operating System Script Collector

The Remote Operation System Script Collector (ROSSC) integrates your monitoring scripts (OS commands) into the SAP Solution Manager Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI). This is useful if you have created, for example, scripts to monitor the availability of databases and network connections. You can process end user alerts which your scripts generated in MAI, without third-party tools. For more information, see Remote Operating System Script Collector.
