End-to-End Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure (MAI) System Monitoring contains various templates which contain the metrics, events and alerts (MEA), and their attributes. They also contain settings for Incident Management, and notifications when an alert occurs. You can base your own templates on the templates delivered by SAP, and adjust them to your requirements. You do this in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) in the step   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Template Maintenance  .

The Template Maintenance outputs the templates delivered by SAP, by managed object types (e.g. Database, Host, Technical Instance or Technical System), grouped by the products for each type. If you have created your own templates, they are displayed in a subtree under the SAP default template on which they are based.

Process

Create and Edit Custom Templates

To create a custom template in the Template Maintenance, proceed as follows:

  1. Switch to editing mode.

  2. Expand the type of a managed object and product for which you want to create a custom template, in the Templates navigation bar. This navigation bar contains all templates delivered by SAP.

  3. Select the SAP-delivered template on which to base your template, and choose Create Custom Template. To edit a custom template, select it.

  4. Make the template settings:

  5. Save your template. You are prompted for a package to which the template is to be assigned.

    Note Note

    Note:

    • You cannot transport the template further if you choose Local Object here.

    • You cannot subsequently change the package in which you created the template.

    End of the note.
Assign and activate templates

When you have created a custom template, it is not yet assigned to a managed object. To use the template for your managed objects, assign it to them, and activate. Proceed as follows:

  1. Go to the SAP Solution Manager Configuration, in change mode.

  2. Go to   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Define Scope  .

  3. Select managed objects, and proceed to Set Up Monitoring.

  4. Assign these managed objects to your template with Assign Templates, and select your template.

  5. Activate the assignment with Assign and Activate.

    Note Note

For further information, see the help for each step.

    End of the note.

You must activate after each change to a template. This ensures that the monitoring settings for the managed objects are those in the current version of the template. When a template is changed, the Assignment Status of the assigned managed systems turns yellow (warning), with the message Reconfiguration Required. Reactivate the template for these managed objects.

You can display the assignment status and activate, at the following places in SAP Solution Manager configuration:

  • To display the assignment status of all managed objects which are assigned to a template, choose the template in Template Maintenance in the navigation bar, and choose the Managed Objects tab. The objects are listed. To activate, select objects choose Assign and Activate.

  • The assignment status of all managed objects which you specified in Define Scope is also displayed in Set Up Monitoring.

Using a Custom Template by Default

A default template is assigned to a combination of managed object type and product, which is assigned to a managed object by default when it is first monitored. You can list the default templates in Template Maintenance, by selecting a managed object type, and the Default Assignment tab.

To use a custom template by default, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose the managed object type (such as Technical System) in the navigation bar.

  2. In the Default Assignment tab, the default template is displayed for each product.

  3. Switch to editing mode.

  4. You can assign a default template for a product, in the drop-down list Default Template: Custom-Defined.

  5. Save your changes.

Other template activities

The Template Maintenance contains other template functions in addition to creating and editing templates:

Function

Comments

Compare

This outputs the differences between a custom template and an SAP default template or another custom template. Select a template, and choose Compare.

In the next screen, choose the template with which the selected template is to be compared, and choose Compare. The differences between the templates are displayed in the tabs.

Content Check

The content check checks whether the hierarchy of metrics, events and alerts has gaps, which can be the case when a custom template is being created. If so, messages which help you to close the gaps, are sent. For example, you are warned if there is one of the following settings:

  • Active metrics are assigned to an inactive event.

  • No active metrics are assigned to an active event.

  • Metrics are not assigned to an alert.

  • No metrics are assigned to an alert.

The check proposes problem solutions, as well as sending messages.

Generate Request

You can generate a transport request to transport custom templates and SAP content to a remote Solution Manager system. The pushbutton to do so is only visible when a custom template is selected.

Delete

You can delete the custom template.

Copy Custom Template

When you copy a custom template, you can assign it to another package than the original. This is useful if the original is a local object, and you now want to transport the template. As you cannot transport a local object, copy it and change its package.

Backup

You can save a version of each template as a backup, by selecting a template and choosing   Backup   Save as Backup  . To determine whether you have already created a backup for a template, choose   Backup   Display Backup Versions  .

To overwrite the current version of a template with a backup version, go to change mode, select the template, and choose Overwrite Current with Backup.

Change Managed Object Directly

You usually make System Monitoring settings in templates, which you then assign to a managed object, and activate. This procedure has several advantages:

  • You can use the settings in a template for several managed objects.

  • You can transport templates within your transport landscape.

  • You can change the settings in all managed objects to which it is assigned, in one step.

You can still make settings for one managed object, but you cannot transport or reuse them. You can also no longer assign another template to this managed object.

To change the configuration of a managed object directly, not in a template, select a managed object in change mode in Monitoring Setup, and choose Maintain MO-Specific Settings. Make the settings for the object, analogously to changing a template, above, and save.

Note Note

Managed objects whose settings were made directly, not in a template, are flagged as Specific to Managed Object in Set Up Monitoring.

End of the note.

To delete managed object-specific settings, proceed as follows:

  1. Select a managed object in change mode in Set Up Monitoring, and choose Maintain MO-Specific Settings.

  2. Go to Expert Mode, and in the Template Settings tab, choose Reset All Settings.

  3. Save and activate with Assign and Activate.
