To monitor more log files in the monitoring and alerting infrastructure than the default settings delivered by SAP. You have created your own template in the SAP Solution Manager configuration (see Create, Assign and Activate a Customer Template).

Create metrics in your template. The customer metrics creation process is described in the help for the step   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Template Management  .

Activities

You are in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) in the step   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Template Management  , and are editing a template which you created. Create metrics as follows:

  1. Go to Expert mode.

  2. To create a new metric, choose the drop-down box   Create   Metric  .

  3. In the user-defined metric creation wizard, enter the required information in the 6 tabs. In the Overview, enter the basic metric details.

    Input field

    Meaning

    Name

Metric name; the metric is displayed in technical monitoring under this name

    Category

Metric category; most log file monitoring metrics belong to the category Exceptions.

    Class

You can enter Metric or Metric Group.

    Note Note

Use Metric Group if the data provider returns more than one value, for example if you search for a character string, and it occurs in several files. You create a metric group in the Log File Monitoring Example.

    End of the note.

    Data Type

The data type of a metric depends on the data supplier. Monitoring data providers usually return values of type Whole Number.

    Unit

Enter the metric unit. As the data provider usually outputs a number of hits, leave this input field empty.

    Active

Set this flag, so that the metric is used.

    Customer description

Enter a description of the metric.

  4. In the Data Collection tab, specify the value to be assigned to the metric, by specifying the data supplier and its input parameters.

    • Specify the value capture frequency in Collection Interval; a common default value is 5 Minutes.

    • Specify how the data is captured, in Data Collector. For the log file monitoring data provider, it is Diagnostic Agent (Push).

    • Select a data provider. SAP delivers various data providers for the monitoring of log files. They are described in detail, with their input parameters, in the section Log File Monitoring Data Providers.

  5. Specify, in the Data Usage tab, which components use this metric. Accept the default settings.

  6. Specify in the Threshold Values tab, how the delivered measured values of the metric are rated (status green, yellow or red). As the data providers above usually output the number of hits of specified character strings (e.g. Error) in the monitored files, a threshold value type Numeric is appropriate. The threshold values depend on your requirements.

    Note Note

You can display a description of the threshold value types by selecting the type and choosing the Info pushbutton next to the drop-down box.

    End of the note.
  7. You can restrict the validity of the metric to specified types of managed objects, in the Validity tab. Accept the default setting.

  8. The technical IDs of the metric are output in the Others tab. You can specify a technical name for the metric. The name must start with Z, to put the metric in customer namespace.

  9. Go to the next step in the wizard. Assign the metric to alerts. As you have not yet created the alert (described under Creating Alerts), you cannot yet make an assignment here.

  10. End the wizard with End, and save the template.

Example

There is an example of monitoring additional log files, from the creation of a customer template the creation of metrics and alerts, to data display in technical monitoring, under Log File Monitoring Example.
