Procedure documentationCreating a Check Step for Objects Recorded by Usage & Procedure Logging Locate this document in the navigation structure

Usage & procedure logging (UPL) is a kernel function that retrieves usage data about report processing, function modules (RFCs), and methods from the kernel and sends it to SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse. You can use the solution documentation assistant to access this usage data. You can create UPL check steps for the following object types:

  • Reports

  • Function modules (RFCs)

  • Methods

You typically create check steps for reports and function modules (RFCs) that use the data from the workload statistics. However, UPL check steps allow you to also obtain usage data for these object types for objects that are not displayed as used by the workload statistics.

Check steps based on workload statistics data differ from UPL check steps for reports and function modules (RFCs) in the following two ways:

  • UPL data is cross-client data and measurements are taken system-wide.

  • UPL data also includes indirect calls.

As a result, the object usage data determined by UPL check steps is more comprehensive and differs from the check step data obtained based on the workload statistics data. You can decide in any given situation whether the workload statistics data or the UPL data returns better results.

Procedure

  • Follow the general instructions for creating a check step. For more information, see Creating Check Steps.

  • Note the special features for creating UPL check steps.

Special Features

Define the following attributes of the check step:

  • Check step type. Choose Usage & Procedure Logging.

  • Specify the UPL object details:

    • If the object has the type report or function module, enter the technical name of the object in the Name field.

    • If the object has the type method, enter the technical name of the class and the method.

Checking Definitions

To check whether the definition of the check step is valid, choose Check.

If the definition can be used and a description of the referenced object can be found, the description is displayed.
