The end-to-end monitoring and alerting infrastructure (MAI) allows stable and reliable operation of complex heterogeneous system landscapes. To monitor the correct functioning of the landscape, a large number of metrics and alert types, as well as various applications, are available to you, which provide prior warning about potential problems.

The self-monitoring has two different aspects:

  • System monitoring of the SAP Solution Manager system

    To ensure the correct functioning of the MAI and other central functions of SAP Solution Manager, the SAP Solution Manager system itself must be working without errors and with good performance. To check that this is the case, use the normal system monitoring functions on the SAP Solution Manager system itself.

  • Monitoring of the MAI and other central functions of SAP Solution Manager

    In addition to system monitoring, there are functions that display specific metrics, alerts, and logs and traces for the central infrastructure of SAP Solution Manager. The self-monitoring is grouped into the following technical components:

    Event Calculation Engine

    The Event Calculation Engine uses the reported metric values to determine the status, events, and alerts of the administered objects on the basis of configuration settings in the Alerting Directory.

    Alerting Framework

    Data Provider Connector

    The Data Provider Connector is responsible for transferring monitoring data into the MAI. The required information can be transferred using a push mechanism or a pull mechanism; various data sources are supported, such as the local CCMS, NetWeaver Management agents, or CA Wily IntroScope.

    Alert Consumer Connector

    The Alert Consumer Connector is the interface for all infrastructures that use alert information, such as the Alert Inbox, mail, or third-party applications. Depending on the relevant configuration settings, the alert information is transferred using a push mechanism or a pull mechanism.

    Agent Framework

    The Agent Framework is the component for central management of the diagnostics agents that are installed on your managed systems.

    Introscope Enterprise Manager

    SAP Active Global Support uses Introscope to analyze causes and to monitor Java applications. The Enterprise Manager acts as a permanent repository for the performance values collected by the diagnostics agents.

    Extractors

    Messages and alerts about extractors come from the Extractor Framework: this is the central infrastructure of SAP Solution Manager for data collection and data distribution.

    Self-Diagnosis

    You can use the self-diagnosis to monitor components, functions, or solutions of SAP Solution Manager. For example, different checks are performed for each function, and, depending on the result of the test, an alert is displayed, if necessary.

To configure self-monitoring of MAI, perform the relevant steps of the SAP Solution Manager configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) in the section   Technical Monitoring   SolMan Self-Monitoring  .

Monitoring of the MAI and other central functions of SAP Solution Manager

If you want to monitor the components of the MAI or other central functions of SAP Solution Manager, use self-monitoring. To do this, call the Administration of the SAP Solution Manager work center, and, in the navigation bar of the work center, choose the Self-Monitoring entry.

The most important metrics are displayed, together with their status (green, yellow, red, or inactive) and the number of associated alerts, broken down by the technical components listed above. The following functions are also available to you:

  • For metrics, you can display a description that provides information about the meaning of the metrics and, if there is an error status, about the meaning, consequences, analysis, and possible solutions of the error. To do this, in the Description column, choose the corresponding button; the description appears below the element.

  • For performance metrics, you can display the development over time of these metrics in the Metric Monitor. To do this, choose the button with the graph icon next to the current measured value.

  • Appropriate analysis tools are available to you at the level of metrics, but also at the level of technical components. You can call these tools directly from the self-monitoring user interface. When you call these tools, additional context information is passed, so that corresponding filters are set to display only the information that is related to the affected object in the appropriate tool. The following analysis tools are available:

    • ECE Performance History

      This tool displays the most important KPIs of the Event Calculation Engine during a definable time period, so that you can assess the performance of the ECE.

    • Log Viewer

      Note Note

      Note that, after calling the Log Viewer, you still need to select the desired query from the Active Queries area, and then need to choose the Refresh button in the bottom right.

    • Alerting Framework

      You can use this tool to monitor the status of the infrastructure that is responsible for alerting. The framework consists of the components alert consumer connector, data provider connector, and Event Calculation Engine. For more information, see Alerting Framework.

    • Agent Framework

      You can use the agent framework to centrally manage diagnostics agents installed in your managed systems. For more information, see Agent Framework.

    • Alert Inbox

      At the level of the technical components, when you choose the corresponding tool, you always switch to the Alert Inbox with the relevant filter.

  • To display all alerts in the context of self-monitoring, regardless of the technical components, choose the Self-Monitoring Alert Inbox button at the top of the screen. You can open the Alert Inbox in a new screen by choosing Open New Window or on the existing screen Embedded.

  • In the Autom. Update dropdown listbox, you can decide how often the displayed data is updated. Alternatively, you can choose the Refresh button next to the dropdown listbox to manually update the values.

  • You can expand or collapse the individual subtrees of the technical components individually by choosing the corresponding icon next to the description. You can also expand or collapse all subtrees by choosing the buttons Expand All or Collapse All.

Displaying Self-Monitoring Alerts

You use Alert Inbox as an unified central access point, to analyze and solve problems relevant to technical monitoring of an SAP Solution Manager landscape, to ensure smooth processing. You have two options for displaying the relevant alerts for self-monitoring:

  • You can use the Alert Inbox in the Technical Monitoring work center. To do this, in the navigation bar of the work center, choose the Alert Inbox entry. To restrict the display to the alerts relevant for self-monitoring, choose the Self-Monitoring Alerts tab page. For more information, see Technical Monitoring Alert Inbox.

  • You can also call the Alert Inbox from Self-Monitoring in the work center Administration of SAP Solution Manager, since the Alert Inbox is configured as the analysis tool both at the technical component level and for the root objects of all subtrees below the technical components. The alerts that are associated with the selected object are displayed.

Displaying the System Status of SAP Solution Manager

To check whether the SAP Solution Manager is working without errors and with good performance, use the system monitoring functions.

To call system monitoring, proceed as follows:

  1. Call the Technical Monitoring work center, and, in the navigation bar of the work center, choose the System Monitoring entry.

  2. In the system list, select the technical systems of SAP Solution Manager AS (ABAP and Java), and choose the System Monitoring button. You can display this function in the work center itself (Embedded) or in a new window (Open New Window).

  3. The status of the system is displayed, broken down by the following categories:

    Category

    Explanation

    Availability

    Information about the availability of the system and its instances

    Performance

    Information about the status of critical performance indicators; in addition to the value itself, you can display a value history to identify longer-term trends, or to place the current value in relation to the long-term development of the value

    Configuration

    Information about the configuration status of the system; this includes results of configuration settings checks and of changes to configuration settings

    Exception

    Information about the system's error messages
