License management gives you central access to the distribution of license data (licenses and maintenance certificates).

You get information about the validity of existing licenses and maintenance certificates in the managed systems, and can monitor the status of the distribution of new licenses and maintenance certificates.

Distributing Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

New licenses and maintenance certificates for managed systems, which the background job REFRESH_ADMIN_DATA_FROM_SUPPORT delivers to the SAP Solution Manager system, are generated in the SAP Global Support Backbone. The licenses and maintenance certificates are available locally in the SAP Solution Manager system, and can be downloaded manually.

You can select whether to activate the automatic distribution of licenses and maintenance certificates from the SAP Solution Manager system, to the managed systems. For further information about the technical process, see Automatic Distribution of License Data.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites in the SAP Solution Manager system and the managed systems are fulfilled (see License Management Prerequisites).

Features

Status Overview of License Data and License Data Distribution

The System Overview contains the following information:

  • System ID

  • Maintenance contract validity

  • Current product version and highest possible release

  • Status of the licenses or maintenance certificates of the managed system

Existing licenses and maintenance certificates are determined, for ABAP systems via the RFC connection and the background job LANDSCAPE FETCH, and for Java systems with the extractor LICENSE DISTRIBUTION. The following status values are possible:

    Status

    License

    Maintenance certificate

    Red

    Valid to has been exceeded.

    Valid to has been exceeded.

A system check has rated the maintenance certificate as non-existent.

    Yellow

Valid to will be reached in less than 30 days.

Valid to will be reached in less than 30 days.

A system check would still rate the maintenance certificate as existing.

    Green

    License is valid.

Maintenance certificate is installed and valid.

    Gray

    No data.

    Rating is not possible.

  • Status of the automatic distribution to the managed system

  • Last call of the managed system

  • To filter by status values in the system overview, choose Filter, and enter the following filter values, in the appropriate column:

    • Red: *red

    • Yellow: *yellow

    • Green: *green

    • Gray: *gray

You get the following detailed information, on which the displayed status values are based, for a selected system:

  • License data from the managed system, determined by the SAP Solution Manager system

  • License data sent from the SAP Global Support Backbone, to the SAP Solution Manager system, which is available for distribution to the managed system

  • Log messages for the managed systems

These can be error or success messages for the license data found and transferred. To change the number of rows displayed, choose Settings.

Note Note

Personalizing the system overview can deactivate the filters when you go from the work center Overview to the license management system overview.

End of the note.
Automatic Distribution of Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

When you activate automatic license management, the data is automatically passed to the managed ABAP or Java system, when the ABAP system requests it, or the extractor LICENSE DISTRIBUTION calls the license data for the Java system.

Download Licenses and Maintenance Certificates

If licenses and maintenance certificates have been fetched from the SAP Global Support Backbone, and saved in the SAP Solution Manager system, for a managed system (status Green), you can download the license data, and save it locally as text files.

You can then upload the licenses and maintenance certificates downloaded as text files, to the license application of the managed systems (for example, transaction SAP License Management (SLICENSE) for ABAP systems).

License Management for Customers of Service Providers

As the customer of a service provider, you can access the license management. Only the systems for your customer number are displayed. You may be assigned to more than one customer number.

You filter the systems by customer number, with the Customer value help. If you do not select a customer number, all systems are displayed.

Note Note

If the managed systems are connected to the SAP Solution Manager system, and all prerequisites are fulfilled, you can activate the automatic distribution of licenses and maintenance certificates.

If there is no connection, you can download the license and maintenance certificates from the SAP Solution Manager system.

End of the note.
