PP/DS Process

Purpose

This process describes a generic process for planning using Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS).

Prerequisites

For the integration between the SAP APO System and an OLTP system:
- You must have set up an interface from the OLTP system to the SAP APO system through which the data is transferred
- You must have maintained a business system group in SAP APO

You have maintained the basic settings for PP/DS planning in Customizing for Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS) under Maintain Global Parameters and Defaults .
If you want to execute integrated long, medium, and short-term planning in SAP APO, you have to use the Demand Planning (DP) or Supply Network Planning (SNP) components in addition to PP/DS.

Process Flow

The following graphic shows the PP/DS planning process.

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text.

You maintain the master data.
You transfer requirements and receipts to PP/DS.
The system immediately executes automatic planning for products for which you have set a relevant planning procedure (such as the standard planning procedure 3 ). In automatic planning, the system creates new procurement proposals to cover the new or changed requirements, and schedules them on the resources.

As a rule, you should only use automatic immediate planning in the Capable-to-Promise scenario .

You plan the procurement proposals in an MRP planning run for products for which PP/DS creates a planning file entry when planning-relevant changes occur (such as the standard planning procedure 4 ). The system also automatically schedules the newly created procurement proposals on the resources in this case. You can use the production planning run, not only for procurement planning, but also to solve specific planning problems using heuristics or optimization.

Note
As a rule, you should plan infinitely in the MRP run, meaning that you do not take account of the resource availability (see SAP note 551124). You use PP/DS optimization or special scheduling heuristics, for example, to plan the sequence of orders on the resources while taking account of the resource availability (finite planning). You do this in a subsequent processing step of the production planning run.

You can use the alert monitor or the plan monitor to display and check planning.
You plan interactively :
- To plan products for which you have set a manual planning procedure
- To solve problems, such as order delays or resource overloads
  
  To do this, you use the following tools:
- Heuristics
- Product planning table
- Detailed scheduling planning board
- Push production
The procurement proposals that were created or changed are transferred to the OLTP system .

If you do not plan all products of a BOM structure in SAP APO, you must complete planning in the OLTP System.
You execute the plan in the OLTP-System, for example:
- Confirmations
- Posting goods receipt/issue
