  Avoiding Unallowed Use-Up of Stock

Use

The ATP check in SAP R/3 does not take account of the product interchangeability master data in SAP APO.Therefore, if you perform an ATP check for a manufacturing order in SAP R/3, the ATP check is able to use up the stock of a discontinued product for an interchangeable component of the manufacturing order. It can do this even if a stock use-up is not or is no longer permitted according to the use-up strategy .The following example should clarify this.

According to the product interchangeability master data in SAP APO, component A is valid until March 31 and is then replaced by component B.The use-up of stock from component A is not permitted after March 31.Stock of 100 pieces is still available for component A on April 1.The bill of material for an assembly contains the component A with an input quantity of one piece. There is a requirement of 100 pieces for the assembly on April 30.The dependent requirements date/time for component A is also on April 30.Since the component A can no longer be used as of April 1, PP/DS planning in SAP APO leads to a manufacturing order for the assembly with the following items:

Original item for component A with the requirements quantity 0 pieces

Substitute item for component B with the requirements quantity 100 pieces

You transfer this manufacturing order to SAP R/3. If you perform an ATP check there for the manufacturing order, the system first checks the original item with the component A. The system finds the stock of 100 pieces (that can actually no longer be used according to the use-up strategy) and confirms the item in full. The same applies to restricted use-up.In this case, you are only permitted to use up stock until the discontinuation date (for example, April 15) and not thereafter.

To avoid unallowed stock use-up, you have to use sources of supply, which are adjusted to the use-up strategy of the component, for an assembly with an interchangeable component in SAP APO.You use these sources of supply to create planned orders in SAP APO that only use up a discontinued component in the use-up phase and thus can contain a substitute item. After the use-up date, the orders only contain an original item with the valid component. This means that the ATP check in SAP R/3 can no longer access the stock of the discontinued predecessor. To create sources of supply in SAP APO, you define the master data accordingly in SAP R/3 and transfer it to SAP APO.

The method described here is recommended in particular if you plan in SAP APO with restricted use-up.If use-up is not permitted and you want to prevent surplus stock arising, you can plan in SAP APO with the remaining lot-for-lot order quantity .

Activities

First, you change the BOM with reference to a change number in SAP R/3.

If, as described in the above example, stock use-up is not permitted in SAP APO, the component A in the BOM is valid until March 31, and thereafter component B is valid. If stock use-up is permitted until April 15, component A is valid until April 15 and component B is valid as of April 16.

If you plan in SAP APO on the basis of production process models, you create two production versions with different validity dates for the BOM.The use-up strategy determines the validity dates as follows:

If use-up is not allowed, the first production version must be valid until the discontinuation date.If use-up is allowed, the production version must be valid until the use-up date.

The second production version is valid as of the discontinuation date (no use-up allowed) or as of the use-up date (restricted use-up).

You transfer these production versions to SAP APO.This results in two production process models with the relevant validity periods.

The first production process model is valid until March 31 (no use-up allowed) or until April 15 (use-up allowed until April 15).It contains the component A. The second production process model is valid as of April 1 or as of April 16.It contains the component B.

If you plan in SAP APO on the basis of PP/DS runtime objects, you transfer the BOM and the routing to SAP APO as a PP/DS runtime object. The result is a PP/DS runtime object in which the component A is valid until the discontinuation date or use-up date, and component B is valid thereafter.
