Function documentationExtended Scheduling for Vendor-Managed Inventory

Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) allows for several different scenarios. One option is to create stock transfers in either Supply Network Planning (SNP stock transfer) or deployment (deployment stock transfer) and TLB shipments in Transport Load Builder and, after transferring these to SAP ERP, generate sales orders based on them. In this case, scheduling takes place in SAP APO. The other option is to create or change the sales order (or consignment fill-up order) directly in SAP ERP. In this case the system triggers Transportation and Shipment Scheduling in SAP APO and uses the master data relevant for SNP as a basis for scheduling. You use extended scheduling to ensure that scheduling is executed consistently across the two systems.

Prerequisites

  • You have activated extended scheduling in Customizing. For more information, see Customizing for Supply Network Planning under Start of the navigation path Advanced Planning and Optimization Next navigation step Supply Chain Planning Next navigation step Supply Network Planning (SNP) Next navigation step Vendor-Managed Inventory Next navigation step Activate Extended Scheduling End of the navigation path.

  • You have created and activated an integration model for scheduling sales orders (or activated VMI scheduling in an already existing integration model). This is not necessary, however, if you run the ATP check in SAP APO and you execute scheduling in SAP APO.

Features

Extended scheduling includes the following scheduling options:

Scheduling in Supply Network Planning (SNP)

If you create or change an SNP stock transfer in SNP, you schedule goods issue, transportation, and goods receipt based on the following master data:

  • Plant location: shipping calendar

  • Customer location: receiving calendar

  • Location product of the plant: goods issue processing time

  • Location product of the customer/ship-to party: goods receipt processing time

  • Means of transport at the transportation lane: transportation calendar, transport duration

After the SAP APO system transfers the TLB shipment (based on the SNP stock transfer) to SAP ERP, the system performs the following mapping:

  • Start of the goods issue activity = material availability date

  • End of the goods issue activity = goods issue date

  • Start of the goods receipt activity = delivery date

When you publish the stock transfer to SAP ERP, the SAP APO system calculates the loading date and the transportation planning date. The system uses the pick/pack time and transportation lead time that you maintain in the relevant location product for scheduling. The system calculates the loading date by forward scheduling from the material availability date and using the pick/pack time, and it calculates the transportation planning date by backward scheduling from the loading date and using the transportation lead time. The maintenance of processing times is optional. After transferring the TLB shipment (created from the SNP stock transfer) to SAP ERP, the SAP ERP system creates the sales order or consignment fill-up order using the scheduled dates and times calculated in SAP APO.

Scheduling in SAP ERP

If you create or change a sales order in SAP ERP, or you create a delivery with reference to a VMI sales order, you call SAP APO Transportation and Shipment Scheduling. For more information, see Scheduling.

SAP APO Transportation and Shipment Scheduling calculates the following dates and times based on the SNP scheduling master data:

  • Material availability date

  • Goods issue date

  • Delivery date

  • Loading date

  • Transportation planning date

To make sure that the transport duration is correctly determined in SAP APO when you call extended scheduling from SAP ERP, in Customizing you assign the means of transport (with which you create the stock transfer in SAP APO) to the shipment conditions maintained in the SAP ERP vendor master record. For more information, see Customizing for Transportation and Shipment Scheduling under Start of the navigation path Advanced Planning and Optimization Next navigation step Global Available-to-Promise (Global ATP) Next navigation step Transportation and Shipment Scheduling Next navigation step Interfaces Next navigation step Define Assignment of Default Means of Transport to Shipping Conditions End of the navigation path.

Note Note

If you do not activate extended scheduling, you can do previous scheduling in SAP APO and then rescheduling in SAP ERP instead. First you execute previous scheduling when you create the SNP stock transfer. After you publish the TLB shipment to SAP ERP, you reschedule the sales order in SAP ERP using Transportation and Shipment Scheduling (unless the ATP check takes place in SAP APO). If you use previous scheduling, Transportation and Shipment Scheduling does not use master data originating from SNP scheduling.

End of the note.
