Starting IDoc Processing
The IDocs created are passed to the associated application program. This application program checks the data and updates it in the application database, if necessary.
Whether the
second step is started automatically or not depends on the
ALE/IDoc settings.
One of the main parameters for this is stored in the
partner profile
(for a partner and a message type). This parameter defines whether the IDoc is
to be processed immediately or by means of a background program.
For the
partner profiles created by the LSM Workbench automatically, this parameter is
set to Start by background program. You can change this manually at any
time. See IDoc inbound processing ® Maintain partner types.

When processing inbound IDocs, so-called "work items" are generated in the standard system. These are elements of the SAP workflow that, in general, are not required for data migration. For information on how — and with which consequences — the generation of work items can be suppressed, see SAP Note 149368.
