Use

You can use this function to pack the items of an advanced shipping notification (ASN) or a returns ASN into handling units (HU). A handling unit represents a unit consisting of the products and the packaging materials into which the products are packed. The result of packing is one or more handling units. You can also pack the handling units into other handling units.

Example

A container contains 16 pallets, each pallet contains 20 crates, and each crate contains 100 pieces of the product being delivered. As packaging material, you use containers, pallets, and crates, and as auxiliary packaging materials, you use steel binders and plastic film.

Packing is part of ASN and returns ASN processing. The HU data is part of the ASN and returns ASN data. You can carry out packing provided that you have not yet published the ASN or returns ASN.

In ASN processing only the supplier can process ASNs and thus carry out packing. In returns ASN processing, the customer sends products back to the supplier. To do so, the customer creates returns ASNs and uses manual packing. However, in returns ASN processing the supplier is also able to create returns ASNs and pack manually.

You cannot pack items from different ASNs or returns ASNs together.

Features

The following functions are available:

      Manual packing

In manual packing, you manually create handling units for the ASN and pack the ASN items into the handling units. Manual packing is relevant for ASNs in the inbound delivery process and for returns ASNs.

      Automatic packing

In automatic packing, SAP SNC generates and fills the handling units automatically based on a packaging specification. You can manually postprocess the packing suggestion. Automatic packing is not relevant for returns ASNs.

      Packing screen

A separate screen is available for packing. The supplier performs manual or automatic packing here. As customer, you can display the packing data here.

      Permitted packaging materials

You can define that only specific packaging materials of a product are permitted for packing. This means you can prevent the wrong packaging materials being used in manual packing or when you create a packaging specification.

      Packaging material capacities

You can specify that the system is to automatically take account of the capacity of the packaging material (such as the volume or weight) during packing and prevent any packing that is not permitted.

      Number assignment

When a handling unit is created, it is assigned a unique number. You can specify external or internal number assignment for this purpose. In internal number assignment (that is, automatic number assignment), the number ranges are, for example, supplier-dependent. Internal number assignment is mandatory for automatic packing.

      Printing labels and delivery notes

When you have finished packing the ASN items you can print labels for the HUs. A label identifies a handling unit uniquely and describes its contents. For the labels, you can use templates that are oriented toward the standards of the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA). In addition to the labels, you can print the ASN and use this document as a delivery note.

Activities

If you want to process the packing data of an ASN that has not yet been published, you call the ASN in change mode.

To call the packing screen, choose the Packing function in the ASN details.
