Managing Configuration Objects 

Use

Use this procedure to create, modify and delete configuration objects.

Prerequisites

To manage configuration objects, you must be a system administrator.

Procedure

Go to the Runtime tab of Configuration Adapter Service in the Visual Administrator and choose Display Configuration. Switch to edit mode.

When you log on to the system with the Visual Administrator, you can only view the configuration objects because you are in view mode by default. To switch to edit mode, use  Switch between view and edit mode. All functions for creating, deleting and modifying the configurations become active when you select a configuration object. You can switch back to view mode using the same icon.

Creating a Configuration Object

       1.      Select the parent node for your component. If you want to create a sub-configuration in the main tree, select Configurations.

       2.      Choose  Create a node below the selected node.

       3.      In the dialog box specify the type and a name for the configuration object. If you do not choose another type, the default is Sub-configuration.

       4.      Enter the required specific data for the following configuration types:

¡        Sub-configuration – you can enable or disable the following functions:

§         Read all – if you activate this function, the configuration is retrieved wholly from the database; otherwise, the system retrieves parts of the contents of the configuration object only by request. By default, the indicator is checked.

§         Caching on – if you activate this function, the configuration object is put in a configuration cache; otherwise, the object is removed from memory when it is no longer in use and the system retrieves it again from the database the next time it is requested. By default, the indicator is checked.

¡        Value-entry – choose the type of the value from the drop-down menu, and enter the relevant value.

¡        File-entry – choose whether to display the file as text or as binary code; choose Upload and browse to the relevant file. You can display the contents of the file either as text or as binary data. To save the file on your local machine, choose Download.

       5.      Choose Create to save the changes, and Close Window to quit the function.

Modifying Configuration Objects

       1.      Select a configuration object and choose  Show the details of the selected node.

       2.      Modify the data. You can use the following functions for the relevant configuration types:

¡        Sub-configuration – you can toggle the Read all and Caching on options

¡        Property sheet:

§         To add custom values for the properties in the property sheet, choose the indicator for the relevant property in the Custom column. In the dialog box specify the custom value and choose Apply custom.

§         To disable a custom value of a property, choose the relevant checkbox in the Custom column, and then Restore default.

The property sheets keep properties set by the server modules. You cannot change a default value of a property in a property sheet. It is also not possible to add or remove a property from the property sheet, as well as to create a new property sheet.

¡        Value-entry – you can change both the type and the value of the object

¡        File-entry – you can:

§         Load another file by choosing Upload

§         Save the file in the file system by choosing Download

§         Change the display type using the Display drop-down menu

§         Edit the contents of the file manually

Deleting Configuration Objects

...

       1.      Choose a configuration object.

       2.      Choose  Delete the selected node.

Deleting a configuration object may result in the failure of critical system functions. It is recommended that you do not delete configuration objects that were created at installation time and by the system itself.
