Background documentationILM Objects and Object Categories

The Customizing settings for ILM Rules are defined in ILM objects. ILM objects are grouped in object categories.

Object Category

You use the object category to group ILM objects according to application area. Within an object category, the runtime-relevant settings of all ILM objects are specific to the application area.

Standard Object Categories

SAP delivers the object categories listed below for SAP NetWeaver ILM. The settings of these cannot be changed.

  • SAP Business Suite (OT_FOR_BS)

Contains ILM objects with predefined settings for the use of ILM rules in conjunction with ILM-enabled archiving objects of the SAP Business Suite. At runtime the system determines specific periods, for example, for the retention of stored data, based on the ILM rules for these ILM objects.

  • Paper Documents (OT_FOR_PD)

Contains the ILM object PAPER_DOCS with predefined settings for the definition of ILM rules for non-electronic documents and other data that is unknown to the system. There is no runtime processing for these ILM rules.

If necessary, you can implement your own object categories for the lifecycle management of paper documents in addition to the object categories delivered by SAP.

For more information, see: Creating an Object Category for the Retention of Paper Documents

Customizing Settings for Object Categories

The object category contains settings that are available for all related ILM objects.

For more information, see: Object Category Settings for ILM Objects

ILM Object

An ILM object enhances either an archiving object with the information for data retention or a data destruction object with the information for data destruction. It contains settings for the definition and evaluation of ILM rules.

Customizing Settings for ILM Objects

ILM objects have the following types of Customizing settings:

  • General settings that are independent of the object category

For more information, see: General Settings for ILM Objects

  • Specific settings that are dependent on the object category and the integration in the runtime environment

The ILM objects in the SAP Business Suite object category delivered by SAP are predefined. Each ILM-enabled archiving object is assigned to exactly one ILM object. However, more than one archiving object can be assigned to an ILM object. To enable the setting of legal holds on specific data such as documents, an ILM object must also contain the assignment to the relevant objects of the Business Object Repository (BOR).

For more information, see: Business Suite-Specific Settings for ILM Objects
