Procedure documentationCreating Object Links for a Project Element

Depending on the current planning stage of your project, you can create object links and operative object links in the following ways:

  • By creating a link to an existing object

  • By planning a link to an object that has not been created yet

In this case, you create the object link without assigning an object. At a later time, when the object has been created, you can edit the object link and add the missing object data.

For more information, see Object Links and Operative Object Links.

Prerequisites

The object type of the object to which you want to link has been configured for usage in projects and is permitted for the project element category of your project element. For information about how to configure the predefined object types, see the attachment SAP Portfolio and Project Management: Configuration in SAP Note 2026421Information published on SAP site under Start of the navigation path Project Management: Configuration Next navigation step Business Customizing Next navigation step Project Management Next navigation step Setting Up Object Links End of the navigation path.

Procedure

The following sections provide a generic description of how to create object links and assign operative object links. Note, however, that some features, such as the search help and existence check for objects have not been implemented for all predefined object types.

Creating Object Links to Existing Objects
  1. Access the Object Links tab of the project element for which you want to create object links. Proceed as follows:

    • For a project definition, phase, task, checklist, or checklist item, open the project’s Structure view, select the project element in the structure tree, choose the Detail subview and then choose Object Links.

    • For a role, open the project’s Resources view, go to the Detail subview, select the role, and choose Object Links.

  2. Choose Create.

  3. Select the object type of the object to which you want to link.

    Note Note

You can use the object type group to restrict the number of object types available to choose from. Note, however, that not all object types belong to an object type group.

    End of the note.
  4. Specify the object to which you want to link, and choose Continue.

    Note Note

If you use the search function to identify the object, you can select several entries from the search result. This enables you to create multiple object links at a time.

    End of the note.

The system verifies that the specified object exists in the source system and creates the link. If you have not entered a name for the object, the system transfers the name of the linked object from the source system to the object link.

  5. Save the project.

Creating an Object Link for a Planned Object

  4. Select the Identify Object Later indicator. If required, enter a name. Choose Continue.

The system creates the object link without assigning an object. In the Identification field of the object link, the text Object has not been identified indicates that this is a planned link.

  5. Save the project.

Assigning Operative Object Links to Existing Objects
  1. In the structure tree, navigate to the task or checklist item for which you want to create the link and open the tab for operative object links.

  2. Choose Assign.

  3. On the following screen, choose Find.

Enter the data of the object. If you use the search function to identify the object, you can select several entries from the search result. This enables you to create multiple object links at a time.

  4. Specify the object or objects to which you want to link, and choose OK.

The system verifies that the specified object exists in the source system and creates the link. If you have not entered a name for the object, the system transfers the name of the linked object from the source system to the object link.

  5. Save the project.

Assigning an Operative Object Link for a Planned Object
  1. In the structure tree, navigate to the task or checklist item for which you want to create the link and open the tab for operative object links.

  2. Choose Assign.

  3. On the following screen, select the Identify Object Later indicator. If required, enter a name. If you do not enter a name, the system transfers the name of the linked object later when you create the link.

  4. Choose Continue.

The system creates the object link without assigning an object, that is, it creates a placeholder for the object link. When the relevant object has been created, you can assign it by selecting the placeholder and using the Identify option under You Can Also.

  5. Save the project.
