Guidelines
This section provides an overview of the steps required to get started with SAP NetWeaver Process Integration (PI):
Plan and perform SAP NetWeaver PI installation using the guidelines in the Master Guide and the relevant installation guide.
The Master Guide, the Installation Guides and the Installation Guide, SAP Enhancement Package Installation for SAP NetWeaver Process Integration 7.1 provide information about the system landscape options that you can implement, the hardware and software requirements, and the procedures for installing, updating, and uninstalling the system.

Install, Configure, and Run SAP NetWeaver PI 7.1
A separate guide on SAP Community Network (SDN) shows you how to install and configure SAP NetWeaver Process Integration, as well as how to set up an example scenario based on the installation. Read this guide to get started with SAP NetWeaver Process Integration, to get in touch with the integration tools, and to see your first PI scenario running. The demo recording accompanying this document shows all installation and configuration steps applied on a typical host.
You can find this guide on SAP Community Network (SDN) at .
Set up your system after installation.
To plan your set-up optimally, familiarize yourself with the main architectural concepts of AS ABAP and AS Java.
For more information, see Overview of NetWeaver AS ABAP and AS Java Architecture.
If you want to be able to use all functions of SAP NetWeaver PI, you need to perform some post-installation steps. The initial system configuration is always required. Perform this configuration for all landscapes.
For more information, see Configuration of SAP NetWeaver
The section Configuring PI (Process Integration) describes the configuration steps required to set up SAP NetWeaver PI within a system landscape that has already been installed. If you have installed additional SAP NetWeaver components, for example Adobe Document Services, you might need to perform additional configuration steps for these capabilities as well.
For more information, see Configuring PI (Process Integration)
Make sure that you have all the required software installed and configured at the start of your development projects.
Get started with the SAP NetWeaver PI tools. To learn the basics of the SAP NetWeaver PI development tools, you can go through the tutorials in the Developer’s Guide and in SDN: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-soa
For each individual tool you can find a section in the respective guide that provides step-by-step instructions to familiarize you with the screens and functions.
For more information, see Integration Applications, Business Partners, and Services, Providing, Discovering, and Consuming Services, Managing Business Processes
Learn how to perform basic administration tasks.
Regardless of the system landscape (development or production) and the use cases that you implement, you need to perform basic administration tasks, such as starting and stopping the system, monitoring its performance. The tasks for the administration of a PI environment can be grouped as follows:
Monitoring and PI Monitoring with SAP NetWeaver Administrator
This section provides information about monitoring your system landscape.
This section provides information about additional administrative tasks to be performed during operation, for example, starting and stopping systems and instances, logging and tracing, saving and restoring data, and so on.
This section provides information about release and upgrade management, transport and change management, and software maintenance.
This section provides information about how to handle problems and error situations. Find out more about the security aspects of the technologies and tools that you use.

Note
You can integrate different applications using SAP NetWeaver Process Integration. You require knowledge of one or both of the following programming languages to develop applications, or to build enhancements for these applications:
Developing Applications Using ABAP
Developing Applications Using Java
You can also use SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment to develop comsumer applications.
