Configuring Characteristics
You use this procedure to create new characteristics similar to pool, hierarchy, and so on (which are delivered as standard) and to group the services and resources according to these characteristics. The grouping functionality also makes the mass operations easier to handle.
You should define the attributes for the characteristics according to the needs of each company. For example, a company that is located in different time zones could require systems to be started/stopped or relocated in a certain time zone.
Due to these needs, in ACC you can now define new characteristics, characteristic values, and the assignment of services and resources to it.
Creating Characteristics
From the Configuration tab page, choose Pool, Network & Characteristic Configuration
Choose Characteristics.
Choose the Edit button to enable edit mode so that only one administrator can configure the characteristic at a time.
Set the following attributes of a characteristic:
Enter a unique name in the Name field.
Enter the description of the characteristic in the Description field. This is an optional field.
Set the cardinality as Single or Multiple in the Cardinality field.
If Single is set, a service or resource can only be assigned to a single characteristic value of the characteristic.
If Multiple is set, a service or resource can be assigned to one or more characteristic values of the same characteristic. In the services or resources screen, the entities will be visible under each value they are assigned if grouped by the characteristic.
Choose the Resources checkbox if you want to assign resources to the characteristic.
Choose the Systems checkbox if you want to assign systems to the characteristic.
Choose the Elements checkbox if you want to assign service elements (databases and instances) to the characteristic.
The attributes Cardinality, Resources, Systems, and Elements can only be changed if there are no entities assigned to this characteristic.
For each characteristic that are created above, define characteristic values:
Enter a unique name in the Name field.
Enter the description of the characteristic in the Description field. This is an optional field.
Choose Save to save the characteristic.
Assigning Services/Resources to Characteristic Values
Select the item from the Characteristic Values table.
Choose the Add button from the Referencing Services/Resources area to add the required services/resources to the characteristic value that is selected above. A pop-up displaying the list of services and resources appears.
Select the required services and resources from the pop-up window and choose Add.
If you want to remove the services/resources that are assigned to a characteristic value, choose the Remove button.
Choose the Move button if you want to move the services/resources that are already assigned to one characteristic value to another characteristic value of the same characteristic. A pop-up appears with the services/resources that are already assigned to a value, and also the services/resources that are not assigned.
This step eliminates the need to remove the services/resources from a characteristic value and add them to a new characteristic value.
Note
If the cardinality is set to multiple, a move will remove ALL already assigned characteristic values of the current characteristic and assign it to the new characteristic value only.
Using Characteristics in the Resources/Services View
Once the characteristics are defined in the configuration, they are added as entries to the Group By field of the services/resource view. If a characteristic is selected in the Group By field, the view will be grouped by it where the characteristic values are the nodes with the services/resources underneath.
