Once you have installed and configured your software landscape, you will need to keep adapting it to changing requirements. For example, you may need to react to changes in the organization of your enterprise, provide new functions, or implement any improvements to the quality of SAP components shipped by SAP at regular intervals.

The Software Logistics functions standardize and automate the distribution and maintenance of software in complex software landscapes. They are divided into the following tasks areas:

Task Area

Explanation/Further Information

Installation

You can set up a new landscape or add a scenario to your system landscape and reuse existing system and components for it. The central document for implementation is the Master Guide. This document contains links to all documents that you need for implementation. You can find the Master Guide in SAP Service Marketplace at http://service.sap.com/instguides.

Technical Configuration

After installing a system landscape you can execute the technical configuration of the system (for example, create users, configure ports) with the Solution Manager. Wizard-Based Configuration supports the configuration tasks of many of the units that can be installed.

For more information about configuration tasks, see Configuring SAP NetWeaver.

System Copy and Migration

To set up your landscape or to create consistent duplicates for test or development purposes, you can copy SAP systems, both in ABAP and in Java. You can also migrate SAP systems to a different operating system or database. For a detailed description of the system copy procedure, see SAP Service Marketplace: http://service.sap.com/instguides. For more information about system copies, see SAP Developer Network at http://sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/systemcopy.

Software Change Management

Software Change Management standardizes and automates the distribution of software changes in system landscapes. This belongs, for example, to transport and change management, enhanced Change and Transport System (CTS+) for non-ABAP transports, and the language transport. You can find more information on Software Change Management in the sections linked under Software Logistics of Usage Types and Standalone Engines.

Software Maintenance

By importing the latest Support Packages and Note corrections, you can ensure that your installed systems are always up to date. You can find more information on software maintenance in the sections linked under Software Logistics of Usage Types and Standalone Engines.

Release and Upgrade Management

You can perform upgrades for your IT and business scenarios. The central document for upgrades is the Upgrade Master Guide. This document contains links to all documents that you need for performing an upgrade. You can find the Upgrade Master Guide in SAP Service Marketplace at http://service.sap.com/instguides.

Landscape Management

The System Landscape Directory (SLD) is the central information repository for your system landscape. It contains information about all installable and installed components in a system landscape. You find the adminstration tasks in the SLD in the related documentation under Administrating the SLD. For more information on the System Landscape Directory, see the SAP Developer Network under http://sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-sld.
