Software components (or versions) are part of the software catalog in the System Landscape Directory. Design objects in the ES Repository and development objects in a development system do actually belong to a software component version, but they are transported and shipped by means of different tools.
For example, CRM 3.0 is a software component version of the software component CRM. You must have already imported a software component version from the System Landscape Directory into the ES Repository before you can create design objects there. Released objects are shipped as software component versions in the form of Enterprise Services Content (ESR Content).
