Procedure documentation Classifying Output Devices  Locate the document in its SAP Library structure

Use

You can classify output devices; that is assign them to a printer group. Although classifying printers is optional, it offers the following advantage: If you also classify your spool servers, the spool system checks that the device and server classifications match. This helps to ensure an optimal output configuration.

You can use the following printer classifications:

·         Production printing is the classification for time-critical printers whose output is connected to the production process, such as wine label printers.

Time-critical print requests should be processed in local printing to avoid network problems.

·         Mass printing is the classification for printers with large print requests, such as long lists.

As mass printing is time-intensive, the printers should be local and connected locally to the application server.

·         Desktop printing is the classification for local printers at the user’s workstation, such as small laser printers that are used in individual departments for smaller, non-critical print requests.

·         Test printing is used to assign a test classification to new printers or to changes in the output configuration

Procedure

The classification is specified in the device definition of the printer, which contains all data required for the printer. The SAP System uses this device definition to address the printer.

You can perform the classification as follows:

...

       1.      Start transaction SPAD, and choose Output Devices.

       2.      Open an existing device definition by double clicking it, or create a new definition in change mode by choosing Output Device   Create/Create Using Template.

       3.      Assign the printer to a printer group by choosing Edit Classification from its device definition.

Result

You have classified the printer for reasons of clarity. If the spool servers are also classified, the system can check whether the server and printer classification match. For example, if spool requests for time-critical printers are only to be processed by spool servers that are classified for production printing.
