Use the SAP Management Console (SAP MC) to start, stop and restart SAP NetWeaver Application Server systems and instances.

Procedure

Starting an SAP System

  1. Start the SAP Management Console.

    The SAP MC automatically displays the instances installed on the local host. If you need to monitor and administer remote systems or instances, you have to register them in the SAP MC. For more information, see Registering Systems and Instances.

  2. In the navigation pane, open the tree structure and navigate to the system node that you want to start.

  3. Select the system and then, from the context menu, choose Start.

  4. In the Start SAP System(s) dialog box, choose the preferred options.

  5. The system prompts you for the operating system (OS) <SID>adm administrator credentials.

    Note Note

    To complete security sensitive operations such as starting, stopping, restarting and so on, you must have administration permissions.

  6. Choose OK. The SAP MC starts the SAP system instances.

    Note Note

    When you start the SAP system with the SAP MC under Microsoft Windows, the database instance starts automatically. However, when you start the SAP system under other operating systems, the database has to be started manually. For information about starting the database, see the respective database documentation.

Stopping a SAP System

  1. Select the system you want to stop and choose Stop from the context menu.

  2. In the Stop SAP System(s) dialog box, choose the required options.

  3. Choose OK. The SAP MC stops the SAP system instances.

Similarly, you can start, stop or restart all SAP systems registered in the SAP MC.

Starting a SAP Instance

  1. Start the Management Console.

    When you expand the SAP system node, all the instances running on the current host are displayed. If you want to change the configuration so that the instances on other hosts of your systems are displayed, you have to register them in the SAP MC. More information: Registering Systems and Instances

  2. In the navigation pane, open the tree structure and navigate to the instance node that you want to start.

  3. Select the instance and then, from the context menu, choose Start.

  4. In the dialog box, choose the preferred options.

  5. The system prompts you for the operating system (OS) <SID>adm administrator credentials.

  6. Choose OK. The SAP MC starts the SAP instances.

Stopping a SAP Instance

  1. Select the instance you want to stop and choose Stop from the context menu.

  2. In the dialog box, choose the required options.

    You can decide the kind of shutdown the application server time-out performs:

    • hard: immediately stops the application server

    • soft: drains the SAP instance first

    • soft shutdown time-out: defines when to switch to hard shutdown if the application server did not perform a soft shutdown within the specified period.

  3. Choose OK. The SAP MC stops the instances.

Similarly, you can start, stop or restart all SAP instances registered in the SAP MC.
