Procedure documentationImporting Non-Modeled Portal Content Locate this document in the navigation structure

Visual Composer portal content modeling enables the import of non-modeled portal content objects into the Visual Composer modeling environment using the Import Portal Content task panel. Once imported, they become models that you can edit and integrate into the development of other models.

You can import one or multiple portal content objects, using a single procedure, from the Import Portal Content task panel. In addition to the main import procedure, two useful import options are available for the import of single objects from the portal:

  • Search for and import a portal object to the Visual Composer model repository for immediate or future use

  • Search for and reuse a portal object, importing it directly into an open model

    Note Note

This option is particularly useful when you reuse a portal object in a model, for example, if you dragged a page from portal content into a workset and then decide that you need to edit the page.

    End of the note.

Prerequisites

To import a portal object, into the modeling environment, from the Search or Browse task panel, a model must open in Visual Composer:

  • For search and import, any model may be open (to enable activation of the Search task panel)

  • For search and reuse, the model into which you want to import the object must be open

    Note Note

Importing by using the Import Portal Content task panel creates a model of the portal object and puts it into the model repository. Having a model open is relevant only if you want to see a progress bar during the import process.

    End of the note.

Procedure

This procedure enables multiple imports.

  1. Choose   Tools   Import Portal Content   to open the Import Portal Content task panel.

The task panel displays the entire contents of the Portal Catalog. You can import only from the Portal Content folder; only this folder contains objects supported by portal content modeling.

  2. Select any object; its ID and name appear in the fields below the tree.

  3. Click Add. The object ID and name appear in the list below. Repeat this for as many objects as needed. Use Remove to clear objects from the list.

  4. At the bottom of the task panel, choose the DC to which you want to associate the imported objects. You can also click New to create a new DC.

  5. Click Start to begin importing the portal objects in the list. (Clicking Close will return to the Get Started task panel.)

During the import process, a confirmation popup appears for each object in the import list. If you choose Cancel for any object, the process goes on to the next object.

Importing from the Search Task Panel

Search to find the object you want to import.

  • In the task panel, right-click the object in the list of search results and choose Import.

The imported object is added as a model to the development component of the currently open model. To add the imported object to a specific development component, make sure that a model from that development component is open before importing.

  • To reuse an object in the currently open model:

    1. Drag the portal object from the list of search results into any appropriate area in the open model.

The drag action is also available from a Browse tree.

    2. In the Design board, right-click the object you reused and choose Import from the context menu.

    Recommendation Recommendation

To view the progress of the import, it is recommended to have a model open in the Design board. The progress bar appears at the start of the import process only if a model is open. Notification of the import status appears when the process is finished.

    End of the recommendation.

    Caution Caution

The direct import into Visual Composer of pages that contain Web Dynpro applications is not supported. Selecting a page containing a Web Dynpro application, in the Import Portal Content task panel, will inactivate the Add function.

Web Dynpro applications, which were pasted into the Portal Catalog as PCD objects, appear as pages in Portal Content and their icons display the letters "WD." These pages may contain Web Dynpro applications, or they may just contain iViews. However, when viewed from Visual Composer, the icons of the pages that do not contain Web Dynpro applications will display the letters "PRT." These pages can be imported.

Indirect import of a page with a Web Dynpro application is supported. This means that when a portal role is imported, and that role contains a page with a Web Dynpro application, the role is imported with all its content.

    End of the caution.

Result

Whichever import option you use, the imported portal object is added to the relevant development component as a Visual Composer model, and it is available for reuse or editing. You can find it using the Search task panel and open it for modeling.
