Support for SAP Business Suite Role Structure |
New |
To support the structure of roles imported to the portal from the SAP Business Suite, certain content-management functions have been added and others enhanced or changed. The content of this type of role is designed and ordered according to the strict layout and hierarchy defined in the SAP NetWeaver Standards and Guidelines for Pattern-Based User Interfaces. In SAP NetWeaver Portal, roles created according to the SAP NetWeaver guidelines for user interfaces are called workcenter roles. All content of these workcenter roles is created and edited directly within a new Workcenter Role editor in the portal. Pages and iViews from one workcenter role can be reused in other roles as well. Standard portal-based roles are now called freestyle roles. For more information, see Understanding Workcenter Roles and What Are Workcenter Roles and Freestyle Roles?. |
Detailed View Tile |

Upload Role from Package |
New |
The content administrator can now directly upload roles from SAP Business Suite packages previously downloaded to the portal, using the option in the context menu of the target folder in the Portal Catalog. The tool displays a list of available roles by business package, by role name, or by current use in the Portal Catalog. When the selected role is uploaded, it is added directly to the selected folder in the Portal Catalog. For more information, see Uploading Roles from Packages. |
Upload Role from Back-End System |
New |
The content administrator can now choose to upload roles directly from ABAP systems using the option in the context menu of the target folder in the Portal Catalog. The Role Upload wizard allows the administrator to search for the role in the selected back-end system, and then upload the role with its contents directly into the folder from which the upload was initiated. For more information, see Uploading Roles from Back-End Systems. |
Workcenter Role Editor |
New |
The Workcenter Role editor has been designed especially to add new content and edit existing content of workcenter roles, according to the specific structure and layout defined for this type of role. The editor itself is designed to reflect the standard structure of an SAP Business Suite role, including:
Like the Freestyle Role editor, the administrator can add content from the Portal Catalog and from the Detailed View tile, and can open each object in the role for editing. For more information, see Adding and Editing Content in Workcenter Roles. |

Filtering Entry Points |
New |
In previous versions, all of a portal user’s entry points were displayed in top-level navigation, regardless of the desktop that was used to display the portal. You can now filter entry points so that only certain entry points are displayed in a given desktop. This applies only to roles, worksets, and folders in this version. If you are using the Ajax Framework Page, portal users can access the defined navigation sets from the View menu in the header area. For more information, see Filtering Entry Points. |
Configuring Levels of Top-Level Navigation |
Changed |
In previous versions, to set the number of levels that appear in top-level navigation, administrators needed to set three separate properties – one each on the Top-Level Navigation iView, the Detailed Navigation iView, and the Content Area iView. A new property, Number of Levels in Top-Level Navigation, has been added to the Classic Framework Page whereby you can determine the number of levels in top-level navigation in a single step. The old properties remain, but are overridden if the Number of Levels in Top-Level Navigation property is set. For more information, see Configuring Levels of Top-Level Navigation. |
Headerless Framework Page |
Changed |
In previous versions, the Headerless Framework Page was hidden and could not be edited or configured from within the portal administration environment. You can now access the Headerless Framework Page from within the Classic Framework Page and the Ajax Headerless Framework Page from within the Ajax Framework Page. For more information, see Headerless Navigation. |
Detailed Navigation Property |
Changed |
The Open Folder When Launched property in the Detailed Navigation iView of the Classic Framework Page determines whether selecting an item in top-level navigation automatically opens a folder if it is the first item in detailed navigation. The Open Folder When Launched property has been renamed to Expand First Item in Detailed Navigation. |

Ajax Framework Page |
New |
Portal framework pages define the structure and layout of a portal desktop, providing all the necessary components for users to navigate and operate the portal, and to facilitate the integration of applications in the portal desktop. SAP NetWeaver Portal now provides an additional framework page with JavaScript libraries, which leverage standard and non-proprietary Ajax technology. The Ajax Framework Page offers the SAP Signature Design theme (an SAP visual design that offers a harmonized interface for SAP's diverse software products) as the default look and feel for the portal. The underlying Ajax technology, together with enhanced client-side caching, ensures that most of the portal page functionality is moved to the client side at runtime and that asynchronous data transfer takes place between the server and the client. The result is a significant improvement in usability of the portal through reduced server load and a flicker-free portal experience. These improvements apply specifically to the navigation areas.
Use of the new Ajax Framework Page does not require changes to existing applications running in the portal or to portal permissions. End of the note. The Ajax Framework Page is the default framework page for all new SAP NetWeaver Portal installations. If you are upgrading from a previous version, the Classic Framework Page remains the default framework page. For more information, see Ajax Framework Page. The administration documentation has been updated to reflect the fact that the Ajax Framework Page is now the default framework page for new installations. |
Dynamic Overview Pages |
New |
A new dynamic Overview page is now delivered with the many of the functions in portal administrative roles, such as Transport and System Configuration in System Administration, and Portal Content Management and Portal Content Translation in Content Administration. The relevant administrator can fully customize the links for each source Overview page, as a default page for each function. Administrators can then personalize any of the Overview pages relevant to their own tasks, by defining and describing the links that they need for their own work, and organizing them into categories. For more information, see Customizing the Overview Page. |
My Objects Tile |
New |
The My Objects tile in the navigation panel lets you manage the content in the Portal Catalog by defining a selected set of your most frequently-used objects. When you add an object to the My Objects list, you create a shortcut to the source object, giving you direct access to it without requiring subsequent searches. With each object in the My Objects list, you can perform the same actions as you would using the Portal Catalog context menus. The My Objects option is available in areas of the portal where the Portal Catalog is used. In each instance, the portal objects that are available in both the Portal Catalog and My Objects list are filtered according to the administrative task. For more information, see Using My Objects. |
Copy ID |
New |
This feature enables the administrator to copy the PCD ID of an object to the clipboard. It is available in the context menu of objects in the Portal Catalog, the My Objects tile, and the Detailed View tile (in Content Administration) For more information, see Managing Objects in the Portal Catalog. |
PortalAlias Cookie: Security Update |
Enhanced |
By default, the PortalAlias cookie is sent to users using a non-secure protocol. You can now set the PortalAlias cookie to be delivered using a secure protocol, such as HTTPS or SSL. You configure this in the following Web module (application) and portal service in SAP NetWeaver Administrator:
|
Portal Administration Documentation |
Enhanced |
The portal administration documentation has been restructured and streamlined and now focuses on user and administration tasks. For more information, see Managing the Portal. |

The initial configuration documentation has been enhanced and updated. The initial configuration of the portal includes the tasks you typically need to perform for the portal immediately following the installation, and up to, but not including, the creation of content for your portal. For more information, see Configuring the Portal for Initial Use. |
