At SAP a unification and standardization process (governance process) ensures that the global data types in the ES Repository can be reused in many SAP applications. SAP creates global data types centrally in the ES Repository. An SAP application that uses a global data type does not need to use all fields (attributes and elements) of the global data type.

Global data types are defined in such a way that as many of their fields as possible can be reused. However, it is possible that some fields are only of use for a specific industry solution.

SAP assigns an industry classification to such fields which ensures that the field is only visible later in those systems that belong to the selected industry. In this way it is avoided that each industry solution, for which the added field is of no relevance, must remove the field again in each application. All fields without industry classification can be used by all applications that implement the global data type.

Prerequisites

The industry classification can only be assigned to fields of aggregated or freely-modeled data types. If a global data type has been copied, and the copy is marked as a restriction of the original data type, the field in which you assign the industry classification is greyed-out.

Note Note

Normally only SAP sets the industry classification.

End of the note.

Procedure

Assigning Industry Classification Fields of a Global Data Type
  1. Select the global data type for which you want to assign an industry classification to a field, and switch to editing mode.

  2. In the Business Context column of the field, call the input help.

  3. In the Industry Classification row call the input help and choose an industry.

  4. Save your changes.

Check and accept changes to the industry classification.

If the global data type was copied before you assigned an industry classification, the classification is only visible in the original. To make the assignment of the global data type that is already available visible, proceed as follows:

Note Note

Using the object check of a copied data type you can ensure whether all fields of the copy have the same industry classification as the original type.

End of the note.
  1. Open the copy of the global data type.

  2. Choose Update Business Context.

The data type editor is responsible for all industry classification that are not yet contained in the copy. Application-specific changes to the copy are retained.
