Displaying LogsLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

You can analyze the logs and their messages, and get more information about them, in the Display Log dialog box.

The log display is used in many SAP system applications, and has a slightly different format depending on the number of messages and the data structure.

The following description is therefore general, and refers to the standard Application Log display (e.g. transaction SLG1) for concrete examples.

Features

In applications with a (potentially) large number of messages, the display is divided into areas. A navigation tree provides an overview and allows navigation among the messages, and either all or a selection of messages are displayed in a list (ABAP List Viewer). The navigation tree can be either above or to the left of the list. Applications with little data have no navigation tree.

Message List

Message types are distinguished by colored icons (Stop for cancel, red for error, yellow for warning, green for information).

You can see whether there is a long text (yellow question mark to the right of the message text) or further detailed information (Detail to the right of the message text), for a message.

Messages also have a problem class attribute (very important, important, medium, additional information). The problem class can be highlighted in color, depending on the application (in the standard display, e.g. very important messages are highlighted in yellow). A message can have additional data (e.g. document or item number, etc.), which can be already visible as a column, or selected ( Display Variant ).

You can get further information about a message by choosing Long Text , Detailed Information , or Technical Information (select message and choose pushbutton).

You can reduce the number of messages by using the error type pushbuttons in the application toolbar. For example, to hide all Information type messages, choose Information - Hide . Choosing this pushbutton again shows all messages of this type.

Navigation Tree

The navigation tree contains information for navigating in the message set. It can have any number of levels. You can select a subset of messages in the tree by double-click. The selected messages are displayed in a list.

Example

In the standard display, the log header is at the top level. The messages are below it by problem class. Display all messages in a log by double-clicking on the log. A double-click on the entry Problem class: Very important only lists all very important messages in the log.

Note

In some applications the message list is initially empty (e.g. in the standard display if there are several logs). In this case you must choose an entry in the navigation tree (e.g. a log). In other applications, all messages are displayed immediately.

The icons at each navigation tree entry tell you the most important message type which it contains.

Example

If you select a navigation tree entry with a red icon, the message list for this entry will contain at least one error message (and possibly also warnings and information). This icon for the most important message type is passed upwards in the tree.

Note

You can also get further information about a log from the log header at the highest level in the standard display. Choose a log and choose Technical Information or Detail . You get technical data about the log (log number, management data, etc.), or further application-specific information, respectively.
