Displaying the Volume (Tape Names) of Scheduled BackupsLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

From the DBA planning calendar, you can view the volume (Tape Names) of a backup action.

Note

If you want to display the volume of a backup action, the action must be in the state Planned.

Tape labels used by SQL Server have up to 128 characters. SAP recommends using tape names with 5 or 6 characters only. This allows you to identify the contents of a tape simply by looking at the label. Make sure that you put the correct name sticker on the tape cartridge before you insert it into the tape device.

SAP recommends using the following naming conventions:

Character Recommended Character to Use

The first character identifies the database on the tape

Single Database:

S:   Master database backup

M:  msdb database backup

R:   SAP database backup

U:   User databases backup

Multiple Database:

C:   Combination (SAP database not included)

I:    Combination (SAP database included)

The second character identifies the type of backup

L:   Transaction log backup

D:   Database backup

+:   Differential database backup

Note

Do not mix transaction log backups and database backups on one tape.

The third and fourth character indicate the day of the month

<dd: day of the month>

The fifth character identifies whether it is a parallel or a sequential backup

P:   Parallel backup

S:   Sequential backup

Tip

RD15S denotes a sequential (S) backup of an SAP (R) database backup (D) on day 15 of the month.

The label RL05P shows that the tape contains an SAP (R) transaction log (L) backup. The backup was performed on day 05 of the month. P denotes that it is a parallel backup.

Procedure

To display the volume (Tape Names) of a backup action, perform the following steps:

  1. Position the cursor on a calendar cell containing a backup action.
  2. Choose Volumes.

A dialog box appears containing the volume (Tape Names) of the tape required for that particular backup action.
