Creating Taxonomies for an IndexLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

You create one or more taxonomies for an index. You can then classify indexed document in these taxonomies.

Recommendation

In most cases, we recommend that you create a single taxonomy for each index. However, it is useful to have several taxonomies for one index if you want to have several views of the same documents.

Procedure

You are in the Index Administration iView.

  1. Click on the ID of an index to reach its index properties.

  2. Choose Taxonomies from the function bar.

You reach the list of taxonomies that are assigned to the index in question.

  3. Choose New Taxonomy .

The New Taxonomy dialog box is displayed.

    Define the following settings.

    Field

    Description

    Name

Name of the taxonomy. After a taxonomy has been created, a folder with this name appears in the taxonomy repository.

    Type

Choose whether you want to create an example-based or a query-based taxonomy.

    Automatic Classification

Defines whether automatic classification is active. If you select this checkbox, documents are automatically classified into the taxonomy.

    Field

    Description

    Train with existing hierarchy

If you want to transfer an existing folder hierarchy to a taxonomy and train it automatically, select this checkbox.

If you have selected it, the system creates a copy of the specified folder hierarchy in the taxonomies repository. All documents in the folders are used as training documents for the category in question. The following fields are displayed:

    Train with this hierarchy

Specify the complete path to the root folder of the folder hierarchy, or choose Browse to navigate to this folder.

    Include Training Documents in Repository

Defines whether the folder hierarchy has been assigned to the index.

If you want documents that are in the folder hierarchy to be visible for end users in the taxonomy, activate this. If you do so, folder hierarchies are automatically assigned to the index.

If you only want to use documents in the folder hierarchy as training documents, deactivate this. If you deactivate it, the documents are not visible in the taxonomy to end users.

Category Matching (only visible if automatic classification is active)

Controls the sensitivity of automatic classification in example-based taxonomies.

When automatic classification takes place, a document is automatically assigned to a category if it has a sufficient degree of similarity to the training documents already in the category. The system dynamically calculates the degree of similarity necessary for automatic classification for each category.

Select one of the prescribed values. If you choose strict, a smaller number of documents tend to be classified into a category. If you choose loose, a larger number of documents tend to be classified into a category.

    Field

    Description

    Copy Existing Hierarchy

If you want to copy an existing folder hierarchy to use it as a template for the taxonomy, select this indicator and enter the full path to the root folder of the folder hierarchy in question.

Automatic training of the taxonomy does not take place. Search queries that you have defined for the folders are not copied.

  4. Choose OK .

The settings that you have made now take effect.

Result

The taxonomy is displayed in the list in the upper area. You can now create categories or enhance a copied taxonomy. For more information, see Taxonomy Explorer .
