Users can define the names of folders, documents, and other objects in KM folders considerably freely.
Requirements
The repository supports properties.
You are using the flexible user interface with the interface commands delivered by KM.
Each object has a name and an ID.
The name is displayed on the user interface and can be defined freely. Since the name is a property of the resource, it is not available for repositories that do not support properties. For example, the file system repository manager does not support the display name.
You can use practically all characters including special characters such as slashes and question marks.
The ID cannot contain special characters, and must be unique within the folder. This ID is not normally displayed on the user interface if the name is available.
For all repositories, the IDs cannot contain a slash (/), backslash (\) or question mark.
Besides the special characters forbidden for all repositories, the IDs of objects stored in CM repositories in FSDB persistent mode cannot contain quotation marks ("), a greater than sign (>), less than sign (<), vertical slash (|), or an asterisk (*).
When you create, upload, copy, move, or rename an object online, the system generates a valid and unique ID that is as similar to the name as possible. The system converts special characters into valid characters for this.
If necessary, you can create several objects with the same name in one folder. If this is the case, the system adds suffixes to generate unique IDs.
What should you consider when copying objects?
If you copy an object to the same folder several times, the target folder has several objects with the same name but different IDs.
Uploading Documents
When you upload a document to a KM folder, the system does not only check whether an item with the same ID already exists in the target folder. The system also checks whether an item with the same name exists there. If this is the case, a dialog box opens, and you can choose one of the following options:
Overwrite the existing document
Upload your document as a new document
You can change or retain the name of the new document in an input field.
File Name Extensions
You can omit the file name extension when you load a document from your local PC to a KM folder. The system generates an ID with the file name extension of the original document.
For example, you upload a document with the file name minutes.doc from your PC to a KM folder. In the Upload dialog box, you create the name Team Meeting Minutes. The system adds the file name extension to the ID: Team Meeting Minutes.doc.
What should you consider when using WebDAV?
When you access KM folders using WebDAV, the IDs of the objects concerned are displayed in WebDAV clients. These can differ from the names of objects on the KM user interface. However, when you create an object on the standard KM interface, the system generates an ID that is as similar to the name as possible.
Exceptions
In some applications the IDs of objects have special semantics. Therefore, if you rename an object on the KM user interface whose ID then differs greatly from the name, the system does not change the ID.
Users only create the names of objects. The system generates valid unique IDs that users do not normally see.
You can display and change the ID if necessary in the Details dialog box. In the standard delivery, this ID is in the Details dialog box for administrators and content managers on the Access Links tab.
