Reindexing and Performing an Incremental UpdateLocate this document in the navigation structure

Context

You use these functions to update an index.

Reindexing

Use the Reindex function to restore a defect index. If you reindex an entire index, the index is rebuilt from scratch. If you reindex individual data sources, all documents belonging to the data source in question are completely indexed.

Reindexing Classification Indexes

The following occurs when you reindex a complete classification index or a combined search and classification index: First, the system indexes the training documents from the training hierarchy (if available), and then the training documents that you have assigned to the categories manually. The system only begins to index the other documents when this process has been completed. This ensures that the entire training set is taken into account when a complete reindexing run takes place.

Incremental Update

You can use the Incremental Update function to update an index if problems have occurred. The index is not completely built up from scratch, but rather the crawler is started to determine which documents were created, changed, or deleted.

  • For Web repositories, this function has the same effect as starting the crawler as normal using the scheduler. The index contents are updated.

  • For hierarchical repositories, the index is usually updated by using events. When you use the Incremental Update function, changes to the index are included even if no events were triggered. This can be the case if documents have been created, changed, or deleted directly in the file system without using Knowledge Management.
