When you edit a document, the system locks the document in question. Only you can then edit the document, and the document is protected against changes by other users. This avoids version conflicts.
When the system has locked the document, you cannot perform file operations with the parent folder. For more information about the file operations, see File Operations in KM Folders .
Online Editing
If you open a document online in the text editor or HTML editor, the system locks the document in question. When you save the document, you can either remove or retain the lock. You retain the lock if you want to continue editing the document later on. During online editing, the content of XML forms is automatically locked.
Local Editing
If you open a document in a PC application using the function Edit Locally , the system also locks the document in question.
The system removes the lock when the document is checked back in or the editing process is terminated.
Manual Lock
You can lock a document manually to prevent other people from editing it. In the standard delivery, choose Details dialog box for the document in question.

Indicator for Locked Documents
Locked documents can be indicated by a lock icon in explorer iViews.
The name of the user who locked the document can be displayed in the left-hand column of the Details dialog box.
Removing a Lock
A lock can only be removed by you or by an authorized person such as an administrator.
In the standard delivery, choose Details dialog box for the document in question.
