Prerequisites

Check that your host system fulfills the SAP recommendations for main memory and swap space.

Note

Note that for UNIX platforms (Linux excepted) only 64 bit is still supported. This enables memory management that is practically maintenance-free.

Procedure

Profile Parameters

The ideal parameter settings depend on the hardware resources available (main memory and swap space) on the one hand, and the system load on the other, that is, the maximum/average number of (active) users working on an application server.

The default values of the profile parameters are recommended by SAP. The default settings depend on which UNIX is in use, and whether the platform is 64 or 32 bit. Run report RSPFPAR in transaction SE38 to see the system and user-defined parameter values.

In particular on 32 bit platforms an application may terminate due to one of the limits. In this case you can increase the value of individual parameters, but you must make sure you only have 2GB of address space, and that one process does not use up all the memory.

The main parameters concerned are:

Caution

The configuration of Memory Management under IBM AIX is different to other UNIX systems. The configuration for AIX memories is described in more detail in Configuration for AIX.

Swap Space

Configure sufficient swap space. SAP recommends 20 GB swap space for 64 bit systems.
