Activating and Configuring the Activity Data CollectorLocate this document in the navigation structure

In SAP NetWeaver Portal, you can activate and configure activity data collection by modifying the collection configuration properties. The activity data collector writes each record to a main file, as specified by the collector files, which you can edit, add, and remove. (For more information, see Creating and Editing Collector Files ).

For information about activating and configuring activity data collection manually, directly in the portal data collection service, see SAP Note 1517296 Information published on SAP site..Activation of the activity data collector and any changes made to its configuration require the restarting of the service in SAP NetWeaver Administrator.

Activate data collection as follows:

  1. Navigate to Start of the navigation path System Administration Next navigation step Content Statistics Next navigation step Data Collection Configuration End of the navigation path and choose the Configuration tab.

  2. Use the Activate data collection checkbox to activate or deactivate data collection.

Upon activation or deactivation of activity data collection, the data collection properties are activated or deactivated accordingly.

  3. If you are activating data collection, enter relevant values for the following data collection properties and save.

Both the Configuration and the Collector Files tabs contain save functions. Each of these saves only the configuration parameters in its respective tab. You must save your configuration separately in each tab.

    Base File Name

The base string from which to build each data file name.

    Directory Name

The directory in which the data file is written, either:

    • Relative to the <System ID><Instance ID>/j2ee/cluster/<Server ID> directory

    • An absolute path on the server, starting with <Drive>:\

    File Encoding

The file encoding of the data files.

    The default is UTF-8 .

    Time to Close Files (GMT)

The hour in the day to close all open files and start writing to a new file, in GMT (format: 0 = midnight, 23 = 11 p.m.).

It may take up to two hours from the specified hour for the file to close.

Close the Collector Files Every 60 Minutes

Valid values are true (activated) and false (not activated). The default is false .

If true , the files are closed every 60 minutes; if false , the files are closed every 24 hours.

Also, if false , the file closes according to the value of the Time to Close Files (GMT) property.

    Max Buffer Size

The amount of data to store in memory before writing the data to a file, in kilobytes.

The value for this property can significantly affect performance, and it is best to experiment to find the best value.

Generally, a high number reduces the number of calls to the database, improving performance, but also requires more data to be written for each call, which hurts performance.

The default values are designed to work well with the default service configuration, including the default file formats.

    Max File Size

The maximum file size, in kilobytes, for the main file before closing all data files and starting to write to new files.

Files may be closed before reaching this limit, as all files are closed at the hour specified in the Hour in the day to close all files property.

    Max Storage Allocation

Defines (in KB) the maximum storage space for data collection files.

By default, no value is entered, which means that there is no limit and no file storage management.

If a value is specified, limiting the number of KB of storage, the new files overwrite the oldest files when the limit is reached.
