Database Business ContinuityLocate this document in the navigation structure

The term “business continuity” covers all activities performed by system administrators to ensure that critical business functions are available to system users. Strategies for high availability are a subset of business continuity activities, but business continuity is not limited to high availability. Other activities that relate to business continuity for databases include:

  • Database backup or archiving

  • Strategies to ensure recoverability

  • Database upgrades with a minimum downtime

  • Space management (including configuration and reorganization)

This documentation describes how you can minimize downtime caused by the SAP system database with the following databases (listed in alphabetical order):

  • IBM DB2 for i IBM DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (abbreviated to DB2 for LUW)

  • IBM DB2 for z/OS (abbreviated to “DB2 for z/OS”)

  • MS SQL Server

  • Oracle

  • SAP MaxDB

Note Business continuity for the database must be part of a system-wide strategy for improving the availability of your SAP system. Therefore, also consider other components of the system, such as the SAP system itself, the network, the hardware, the operating system services, and so on.
