Queries and Query ViewsLocate this document in the navigation structure

Description

You can still process existing queries from SAP BW 3.x with BEx Query Designer. BEx Query Designer is a component of SAP NetWeaver 7.2 and is installed with the BW Add-On of the SAP GUI.

Since BEx Query Designer was completely redesigned however, and has a new user interface (based on Microsoft .NET), the new functions can only be used with BEx Query Designer from SAP NetWeaver 7.2. These functions are not available in the BEx Query Designer version from SAP BW 3.x.

Query views do not have to be migrated, meaning that they do not have to be saved with the BEx Query Designer version from SAP NetWeaver 7.2. They can still be used after migration. More information: Runtime and Design-Time Cross-Dependencies: SAP BW 3.x and SAP NetWeaver 7.2.

General Practices with Migration

If required, you can open and edit queries from SAP BW 3.x with the BEx Query Designer version from SAP NetWeaver 7.2. As soon as you save a query however, it is stored as a SAP NetWeaver 7.2 query. Queries from SAP BW 3.x and SAP NetWeaver 7.2 are stored in the same tables. Only the version information is adjusted accordingly.

Once you process and save queries with the BEx Query Designer version from SAP NetWeaver 7.2, you cannot open them again with the BEx Query Designer version from SAP BW 3.x. The queries are still displayed in the open dialog for the BEx Query Designer version from SAP BW 3.x, but cannot be selected.

The reusable components of a query (structures, restricted and calculated key figures, variables) are also saved in the new version. This can result in dependencies to other queries. These dependent queries can also only be opened with the BEx Query Designer version from SAP NetWeaver 7.2. For information about eliminating these dependencies, see SAP Note 884629, which provides details about restoring temporarily stored queries.
