Description and Detailed Information

Monitoring in the BW Administration Cockpit

Monitor the performance of BW processes

Monitor the status of BW processes and requests

Monitor the performance of BEx applications

Display the BW usage statistics

Monitor the database load

Monitor loading and BW processes: Daily

Monitor the performance of BEx applications: Weekly

You can execute the following monitoring tasks in the BW Administration Cockpit:

  • Display the runtime statistics for query views, Web templates, Web items, BEx workbooks and InfoProviders
  • Display the runtime statistics for data load processes (InfoPackages and data transfer processes), process chains, and processes in process chains
  • Display the status of requests in BW objects and of processes and process chains
  • Display the memory used on the database

You can call further analysis functions from the context menu. More information: BW Administration Cockpit .

The basis of the data displayed in the Administration Cockpit is the technical content for BW statistics. More information: Technical Content in BI Administration Cockpit .

In Query Designer, you can define threshold values (exceptions) for user-defined or delivered queries for technical content. Using information broadcasting, you can forward a document to system administration when a lower or upper threshold value is exceeded.

More information: Exception Reporting

Monitoring in CCMS

Monitor the BW processes

Daily

You can perform the following monitoring tasks in the BW monitor in CMMS:

  • The BW monitor in CMMS integrates the major scheduling tools for BW processes, the process chains into the CCMS. This integration allows monitoring and proactive altering using process chains and most BW processes.

By double-clicking the process chain, you can call the log view for it. From the log view, you can display additional messages for processes included in the process chain, and call process monitors, such as the extraction monitor.

More information: BW Monitor in CCMS

If you want to receive automatic notification of CCMS alerts and do not want to have to check the status manually in the BW monitor in CMMS, you can forward alerts to Alert Management (ALM) . This allows you to use the Universal Worklist (UWL) for monitoring tasks for example.

Monitoring the consistency checks of the analysis and repair environment

Weekly. Important checks: Daily

Using the BW monitor in CCMS, you can check whether alerts are triggered when consistency checks are carried out on BW metadata and data from the analysis and repair environment.

More information: BW Monitor in CCMS

For information on how you can be automatically kept informed using CCMS alerts, see Forwarding Alerts to Alert Management (ALM) .

Availability monitoring for UD Connect

You can monitor the availability of the J2EE Engine using the CCMS Alert Monitor. Availability monitoring is performed using the Generic Request and Message Generator (GRMG). If the availability check fails, an alert is triggered in the central monitoring system.

To check whether alerts have been triggered, in CCMS Alert Monitor (transaction RZ20) choose SAP CCMS Technical Expert Monitors → System / All Monitoring Segments / All Monitoring Contexts → SAP_CCMS_<Application Server>_<SID>_<System Number>. The messages are shown under the node GRMG: BW.UDC: v1.0.0. %SID:%HOST (replace %SID and %HOST with the values for your server).

For information about how to configure availability monitoring, see SAP NetWeaver Customizing at SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse → UDI Settings by Purpose → Install Availability Monitoring for UD Connect in CCMS.

To find out how to be alerted automatically using CCMS alerts, see Forwarding Alerts to Alert Management (ALM) .

Additional Monitoring Tasks

Monitor periodic process chains

Daily

In periodic process chain monitoring, you can regularly check the status, runtime and delay of the current runs for selected process chains. You can navigate to the detailed log view for a process chain run from here. You can also enter a distribution list of people to send alerts to informing them about the status of runs, thus automating the monitoring process.

More information: Monitoring Current Runs of Periodic Process Chains

Check the BW Delta Queue

Daily

The delta queue is a data store for change records in the source system. In the delta queue for a DataSource, you can check whether and how much data it contains. For DataSources that support generic deltas, you can display the current value of the delta-relevant field in the delta queue.

More information: Delta Queue Check

Monitor data requests and data processing for real-time data acquisition

Daily

The monitor for real-time data acquisition displays requests for InfoPackages and requests for data transfer processes, together with their status. You can navigate to the relevant request monitor to display detailed information.

More information: Monitoring Real-Time Data Acquisition

Display structure and status of aggregates or BW accelerator indexes

Check aggregates and BW accelerator indexes

BW Accelerator Monitor is the central point of entry for monitoring SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator in your BW system. See Monitoring SAP NetWeaver BW Accelerator and Monitoring BWA Indexes .

For more information about aggregates, see Performing Aggregate Checks .

Monitor BW log files

The log files can be found in the Log Viewer under ./log/Application/BW/*.

Display and evaluate BW logs in the application log

You can find BW logs in the application log (transaction SLG1) by selecting RS* or BW* as the object.

More information: Application Log - User Guidelines (BC-SRV-BAL)

Housekeeping

Page out or delete business and administration data

Data archiving and near-line storage, depending on your data-ageing strategy

Business data: Weekly. Quarterly for aggregates.

Administrative data: Weekly

Statistical data: Quarterly

To optimize the data volume in your system, we recommend archiving or deleting certain data on a regular basis.

More information: Optimization of Data Retention

The following information lists tasks that you can execute for further processing or whenever critical situations or alerts occur:

Task

Description

Can Be Called Using CCMS

Can Be Called Using Administration Cockpit

Check process chain runs

In the log view for process chain maintenance, you can display one or more runs for a process chain. More information: Process Chain Logs Display

Yes

If you double-click the progress of a process chain in the BW monitor in CCMS, the system displays the log view of the process chain maintenance. You can check the process chain here.
