You use this process to convert CAD originals associated with SAP documents by using the standard conversion method or by registering the documents for conversion or direct conversion without registering. This process enables you to convert 2D and 3D source files into one or many lightweight viewable file formats.

Prerequisites

You have made the settings in Customizing for Maintain Conversion Trigger under Cross-Application Components -> Document Management -> Visual Enterprise Generator.

Process

Note Note

You can access the reports used in this conversion workflow from the SAP Easy Access screen   Logistics   Plant Maintenance   Management of Technical Objects   Environment   Documents   Environment   Conversion with SAP Visual Enterprise Generator  .

End of the note.
  1. You register documents for conversion using the report Document Registration for Conversion (transaction code DMS_REG01) or trigger conversion of a document manually using the report Document Start Conversion (transaction code DMS_CONV01).

For more information, see Document Registration for Conversion and Document Start Conversion.

  2. You schedule a periodic batch job to send the documents to SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator for conversion. To do this, use the report Batch Job for Conversion (transaction code VEG_BATCHJOB).

For more information, see Batch Job for Conversion.

  3. When an SAP document is sent for conversion, the following communication takes place between DM and SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator:

    1. DM triggers a web service call to SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator. This web service contains call back web service URLs, storage category, tagging data of the object, and so on. Tagging data provides the business context of the objects sent for conversion.

    2. SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator acknowledges a conversion message from DM by sending a job ID.

    3. SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator produces a conversion file for each part and assembly in the source document.

For Enhancement Package 4 (EHP 4), EHP 5, and EHP 6, the converted documents for an assembly conversion contain the tag metadata that was provided in the input of the web service call to start the job.

    4. SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator does not retain either the original or the converted documents except in the case of an assembly conversion. It sends the converted files to the content server for DM, and stores the documents with unique file names for every directory.

These converted documents contain a metadata identifier that provides a link between the converted documents and SAP business data.

    5. When a conversion is complete, SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator triggers a job completion call to DM.

  4. You can monitor the progress of the conversion using the report Job Log Monitor Tool (transaction code VEG_JOBMONITOR).

For more information, see Job Log Monitor Tool.

  5. A standard BAdI: Enhancement for Conversion of Original Appl. Files in DMS implementation enables SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Generator to attach the converted file to the source document. You can also implement the BAdI and specify a different SAP document for storing the converted file. This BAdI can also be implemented to specify the metadata that has to be tagged to the original during conversion.

  6. You display the converted documents in DM using the SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Viewer or SAP 3D Visual Enterprise Author by making the relevant settings in the Customizing for Define Workstation Application under   Cross-Application Components   Document Management   Control Data  .
