Kanban Without Integration of MRP Locate this document in the navigation structure

Prerequisites

In order for the material not to be planned - that is, so that no additional replenishment elements (planned orders or purchase requisitions) are generated by the MRP run - the material has to be excluded from MRP in the storage location assigned to the production supply area of the supply source. For more information, see: Excluding a Storage Location from MRP .

If a material is procured without integration of MRP , you must make the following settings:

  • Storage locations that are used for procurement with Kanban without integration of MRP must be excluded from the planning. Furthermore, the storage location from which backlushing is to take place must be defined for components. See also Storage Location Assignment for Kanban .

  • Under certain circumstances, a valid MRP type must also be maintained for materials that are procured without the integration of MRP. This is the case:

    • If run schedule quantities or planned orders are to be generated as replenishment elements by Kanban (Kanban with run schedule quantities).

    • If capacity requirements are to be generated.

    • If the material is to be included in long-term planning.

    • If the material is to be controlled via Kanban at certain storage locations only, whereas the other storage locations are to be covered by MRP.

Alternatively, you can assign the MRP type “ND” (no planning) to the material.

  • You must maintain a repetitive manufacturing profile (in the MRP data screen) for replenishment strategies with a cost collector (in-house production with run schedule quantities, manual Kanban). In the standard SAP system, a repetitive manufacturing profile specially designed for Kanban is available. This profile enables a cost collector to be generated.

Features

When the demand source calls for a new kanban from the supply source, the system generates a replenishment element (run schedule quantity, production order, purchase order, etc.) for the required quantity. The material is procured with this element. Confirmation takes place with reference to the element and, upon delivery, the goods receipt is posted against it.

In this process, you must note two things in the event that kanban-controlled materials have a bill of material:

  • The BOM is not exploded further for the storage location excluded from MRP. That is to say, procurement elements at this storage location do not lead to dependent requirements for components of the material controlled by Kanban. Therefore, if a material controlled in this way has components, the latter can only be procured via Kanban or consumption-based methods.

However, it is possible to plan component requirements using long-term planning. In long-term planning, you can also create simulative dependent requirements for kanban-controlled materials which, among other things, provides you with a preview for negotiations with your vendors.

  • However, it is possible simultaneously to control a material via Kanban at certain storage locations and include it in MRP at others. This means:

    • Procurement elements at storage locations that are covered by MRP lead to dependent requirements for components.

    • Procurement elements at storage locations that are excluded from MRP do not lead to dependent requirements for components.
