Note Note

This topic does not apply to SAP system that run on hosts of type Microsoft Windows NT. The logging processes described here are not required on these platforms.

End of the note.

You must end collect and send processes of the system log explicitly whenever the host operating system is shut down or started up. If you start processes with the start profile then the processes are automatically ended when the system is shut down. Log system processes are not affected if the SAP system crashes. A crash means that work and dispatcher processes are terminated.

Process

If you have to end a logging process with an operating system command then you can execute a normal or acclerated end to the process. An example of a command of this type is the UNIX command kill.

Using an end option triggers a normal end process. The affected process ends all processing and is then terminated: It is not in an idle state. In this case a send process attempts, for example, to complete the processing of all messages in a log before it is ended.

If an end option is used again then an accelerated end procedure is triggered. An active process closes the current editing and is then terminated. A send process terminates, for example, the sending of the current message before it is ended.

Note Note

An inactive process is canceled immediately with an end command. It is not restarted automatically: You either have to restart the system or start the process again manually.

End of the note.
Effects of an Operating System Shutdown

If you shut down a system without ending the collect process, or if a system crash occurs, then it is possible that the central system log is defective. This occurs if the collect process writes a message to the log file while the system is being shut down.

If a log is defective because of an incomplete message or another problem then you have to solve the problem manually by repairing or deleting the log file. The log system processes respond to a defective file with error messages.

Lock and Release Processes

You cannot start a locked process. In particular, send processes cannot be started automatically if you lock them. You must lock a process if you do not want system log messages to be forwarded or if the whole SAP system runs in one single instance. To lock processes:

  1. Stop the process that you want to lock.

  2. In the pid file of the process, enter the value -1.
