 Support of Substance Groups

Content providers can group substances that have identical properties into substance groups. Since the Open Content Connector (EH&S OCC) supports this concept, the improved data structure improves both the performance and the amount of memory space that is required.

The use of substance groups makes it possible to assign different data to a substance depending on how it is used. For example, the same substance may be rated differently depending on its usage or its physical-chemical properties. The user then decides whether one variant or the other is to be loaded.

If you want to load the substance data structured into substance groups, set the Use Substance Groups indicator in the Data Options screen area of the Settings dialog box.

When you set the indicator, the system searches for group substances in the data for the required substances. The system reads all of the group substances that are found and assigns the data to the relevant substance. The group substance data is displayed in EH&S OCC for this substance. You can see the assignment to group substances as a subnode in the tree. In this view, you can deselect individual characteristics or load them as inactive or active.

When you save the data, the substance group data (such as the data for the actual substance) is updated. An assignment to the respective group substance is not explicitly saved. The additional identifier, NAMOCCGROUP, is also updated in the substance. This is given a list of the group substance names divided by commas as the value. This means that it is always possible to see which substance groups the substance is assigned to. Identifier NAMOCCGROUP is displayed in the specification header data.

Caution Caution

We recommend that you set the Use Substance Groups indicator.

If you do not set the indicator or you have loaded data with the Auto Load function, only the data for the actual substance is read and updated. However, the system determines whether a substance is assigned to a substance group for every substance. If this is the case, the NAMOCCGROUP identifier is also updated as well as the substance data. This identifier shows that there are substance groups assigned for this substance. In this case, the identifier value is X. You can restrict the selection of substances in EH&S to substances that have a group assignment. You can then reload these with substance group data.

End of the caution.

Note Note

The Auto Load function should not be used for substance groups. Since the EH&S Open Content Connector cannot decide which of the substance groups are to be loaded, the user must select them manually.

End of the note.
