Background documentation Prerequisites for Original Batches Locate the document in its SAP Library structure

Prerequisites

Customizing

To use the original batch function, you have selected the Original Batch Reference Material indicator in Customizing for Logistics - General under Material Master ® Basic Settings ® Make Global Settings.

Material master

In order for you to be able to create original batches, you must have made the following settings in the material master for the relevant material:

·        The Batch Management Requirement indicator must be selected.

·        Original batch management must have been allowed using the OB Management field.

You can also make these settings in the following views of the material master:

·        Purchasing

·        Plant Data/Storage1

·        Work Scheduling

Background documentation

You can also create the original batch for an unvaluated original batch reference material. To do this, you must enter the relevant unvaluated material in the OB ref. material field in the material master.

The item in the production order or purchase order for which you want to create an original batch must not have the status Technically completed or Deleted.

Working with Original Batch Reference Materials

You can enter an original batch reference material (OB reference material) in the material master at either plant level (views Purchasing, Plant Data/Storage 1 or Work Scheduling) or production version level (view MRP 4).

If you enter an OB reference material for a material, the system creates the original batch for the OB reference material. This is particularly useful, for example, if different materials are manufactured from a semifinished product (for example metal melt), or if the semifinished product and the materials produced from it have different characteristics.

Note

The OB reference material must be an nonvaluated material. In Customizing for the Material Master under Basic Settings ® Material Types ® Define Attributes of Material Types, you must not have set value updating for the material type of the material.

If you enter a different OB reference material at plant level than at production version level, the system creates the original batch for the OB reference material of the production version.

You can assign an OB reference material to more than one material. This means that you are able to assign batches of different materials to an original batch. This is useful, for example, if different materials are produced from one material (for example, a metal melt), whose batches have common characteristic attributes.
