Role and Work
Center Concept
The majority of mySAP ERP business packages comprise roles and work centers.
A role in the portal enables users to access applications and transactions that they require to carry out the tasks of a particular role in the enterprise. The applications and transactions can be accessed as services in the portal, regardless of the back-end system in which they are located.

An employee in Purchasing enters data in the system that runs mySAP ERP Operations. In his or her role as Employee, the same person submits a leave request in the system that runs mySAP ERP HCM. In the portal, the employee can access these transactions without having to think about the system in which the transactions are located.
A role provides users with simple, direct access to the services that they use more or less regularly, regardless of the system in which the services are executed.
A role can comprise several work centers, which bundle the services for a particular task within a role. A work center is therefore the starting point for an employee’s work in a particular task area. From a technical point of view, a work center is a workset in the business package.
The business packages for the roles are provided with mySAP ERP. In most cases, a business package comprises the portal content for a role.
For information about the prerequisites, see the documentation for the relevant business package.
Portal content for the roles provides various options for accessing the services:
● Push principle
The system notifies the user that something has to be done. Various monitors, worklists, or reports provide users with information or warnings about the data in their area of responsibility. For example, a manager can receive a warning if the costs for his or her cost center are irregular. Users can then go directly from the monitor or worklist to the place where action is required.
● Pull principle
In addition, users have easy access to services that are relevant for them, which they can access as required. A service is opened in a separate window.
Because a user can be assigned to multiple roles, the roles are structured in the same way for consistency, and use some of the same tools.
● Universal worklist
Comprises tasks, alerts, and notifications that were sent via workflow to the user logged on. This is how the system notifies users of actions they need to carry out.
For more
information about using the universal worklist, see
Using the Universal
Worklist.
For
information about configuring the universal worklist, see
Universal Worklist
Configuration.
● Personal object worklist
Comprises objects for which the current user is responsible. For more information, see Personal Object Worklist.
● Generic key figure monitor
Enables
you to define and monitor key figures. For more information, see
Generic Key Figure
Monitor.
● Personalization framework
Enables
user-specific personalization of data, which means that the current user sees
only the data for which he or she is responsible and that he or she wants to
see in the context of the application. For more information, see
Personalization
(CA-GTF-SGF-FPB).
● Launchpad
Centrally managed list of reports, to which users can add their own reports. Each role contains a workset containing the launchpad. The workset is either called "Reports” or “Analytics.” For more information, see the workset documentation for the individual business packages.
● Service map
Provides an overview ‑ similar to a site map of a website ‑ of all services available on the various navigation levels in a role with a short description. The service map is generated by the system on the basis of the portal content directory.
Generic iViews for
these tools are provided in the
Business Package for
Common Parts. You have to
install this business package for the roles that use the above-mentioned
modules.
