You are logged on as user QSECOFR, <SID>ADM or a user profile with similar authorization.
You have enough storage tapes available and initialized to hold the complete backup of the SAP libraries.
You have decided whether you want to perform an offline backup, an online backup with all work processes at transaction boundaries, or an online backup with partial transactions.
You can back up SAP libraries offline after the SAP system has stopped or you can back up the libraries online without stopping the SAP system.
An online backup is better for the SAP system performance, because it avoids resetting all buffers and caches when stopping and starting the SAP system. The online backup uses the Save-While-Active function of the operating system. For a description of the Save-While-Active function and its limitations, see Save-While-Active Function.
To stop your SAP system instance, enter command STOPSAP.
Wait until all work processes in the related subsystems have ended.
Start a backup of the database libraries by prompting command SAVLIB using F4.
In the input field for the Library parameter, enter a plus sign to allow more entries.
Enter the names of the database libraries and journal receiver libraries that are relevant to your installation:
R3<SID>DATA
R3<SID>JRN
SAP<SID>DB
SAP<SID>JRN
The libraries R3<SID>DATA and R3<SID>JRN are used by an SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP, and the libraries SAP<SID>DB and SAP<SID>JRN are used by an SAP NetWeaver Application Server Java.
For the Device parameter, enter the name of your tape device such as TAP01. For additional parameters, press F10.
For the Save active parameter, enter *NO.
For the Output parameter, enter *PRINT.
To save space on the media, for the Data compression parameter enter *YES and for the Data compaction parameter enter *DEV.
If you want to save access paths (indexes), for the Save access paths parameter enter *YES.
Saving access paths requires more time during the backup and more space on the backup tapes, but the recovery of a system after data loss is faster because the indexes do not have to be rebuilt after restoring the tables.
Choose Enter.
Verify that the backup is complete. To look for error messages, enter the command DSPJOBLOG.
In this case, you need to correct the error and rerun the backup.

You can perform an online backup with all work processes at transaction boundaries or with partial transactions:
If you are performing an online backup with all work processes at transaction boundaries, enter a reasonable timeout value for the Save active wait time parameter, Object locks field, such as 3600, and leave the other fields with the default values.
If you are performing an online backup with partial transactions, enter a reasonable value for the Save active wait time parameter, Object locks field. For the field Pending record changes enter *NOCMTBDY, and for the field Other pending changes enter *LOCKWAIT.
For the Output parameter, enter *PRINT.
