Background documentationTypes of Administrator Roles Locate this document in the navigation structure

SAP NetWeaver BPM differentiates between two types of administrator roles:

  • Technical administrator

  • Business administrator

Technical Administrator

The technical administrator has a deep technical knowledge of the full system. Technical administrators have full access to all process and task instances from all process definitions and can manage these processes and tasks. In addition, the technical administrator can monitor and manage BPM systems and the Application Server Java (AS Java).

Typical tasks of the technical administrator:

  • Provide support for technical problems with the process execution and the connectivity

    Manage BPM process instances

    • Suspend, cancel, resume process instances

    • See the context information of process instances

    Manage BPM task instances

    • Re-assign actual owners to a task instance

    • Suspend, cancel, resume task instances

  • Keep the Application Server Java (AS Java) running by using the applications that are integrated in the SAP NetWeaver Administrator

  • Perform standard housekeeping tasks, such as archiving and BPM system and process monitoring.

Business Administrator

Business administrators provide a first level support for processes and tasks they are assigned to as business administrator. They do not provide support beyond processes and tasks. That means, they do not provide technical support, for example, for connection problems with the Web server. Business administrators are assigned to the active pool of a BPM process and optionally assigned to human activities and tasks in the process composer.

Caution Caution

A business administrator of a process is not automatically business administrator of the human activities and tasks that are included in the process. This could lead to the situation that the business administrator can manage the process instance but not the associated task instances. Therefore, we recommend to assign the same business administrators to the active pool (process) and the human activities and tasks in the process.

End of the caution.

More information: Process Roles, Defining Process Participants Using Pools.

Typical tasks of the business administrator:

  • Ensure seamless operations of business processes he/she is assigned to

  • Take action to resume failed process instances or task instances
