The information included in this section provides a starting point for general administration and optimal maintenance of your BI system. It contains BI-specific information for various tasks, along with a list of any relevant tools required where applicable.

Note that this section refers to the BI system in general. For more information about specific administrative tasks associated with the BI scenarios, see:

Enterprise Data Warehousing

Business Planning and Analytical Services

Enterprise Reporting, Query and Analysis

Due to the close link between BI systems and the AS ABAP, AS Java and EP (Enterprise Portal) NetWeaver systems, we recommend that you also read the relevant administration documentation for these. More information: AS ABAP (Application Server for ABAP), AS Java (Application Server for Java), and EP (Enterprise Portal).

Note the following tasks that are necessary when managing BI systems:

Starting and Stopping SAP NetWeaver ABAP and Java

      High Availability

Backup and Recovery (AS ABAP) and Backup and Recovery (AS Java)

Caution During data saving and recovery, note the following when you extract data in the delta process from a source system into a BI system:

Installing a backup on a BI system or on a source system connected to it can cause irreparable damage to cross-system data consistency. Active delta processes between the BI system and the source system are most affected. For this reason, we recommend that you only perform synchronous backups in systems that are networked with each other and (if necessary) that you always run a synchronous recovery. If this is not possible, ensure that you follow SAP Note 731682. This note contains information about the risks of a backup and recommendations for the backup with relation to active delta processes. You can display the SAP Note at http://service.sap.com by using the quick link notes.

Monitoring (AS ABAP) and Monitoring (AS Java)

Monitoring Space Management and Monitoring ABAP Performance

      Workload Monitor

For information about BI-specific monitoring tasks, see the administration guide for the BI scenario Enterprise Data Warehousing under Tasks Performed Regularly - Monitoring

Note

We recommend that you read and use this section in conjunction with other documentation such as the Master Guide and SAP Library.
