Function documentationMetadata Export and Import

This function allows you to export configured metadata from a source system (a development workstation, for example) to a file, and then import the metadata from the file to a target system (a test workstation, for example).

You can use this function in the following scenarios:

  • A solution consultant designs reports and document layouts on a PC and needs to upload this data to the customer's system.

  • A customer makes changes in a development workstation and needs to update these changes across the test and production environments.

  • SAP delivers configured metadata and demo data, as a database, to the customer with the mobile applications. This database is called prefill or advanced prefill.

    • The prefill database contains choice fields, application parameters, password parameters, inbox UI mappings, relationship categories, and demo data.

    • The advanced prefill database consists of reports, charts, business content providers, advanced selections, advanced selection criteria, document layouts and their elements, contact types, business hours, sales transaction configuration entries, and field property maintenance entries.

The export-import function simplifies the collection and shipment process of these databases

Note Note

You cannot export or import demo data, such as business partner records, since it does not contain memo fields.

End of the note.

Prerequisites

You have the same version of mobile application on the source and target systems.

Features

  • Secure transfer of metadata

The configured metadata, called as entities, contain fields of the type, memo. Since these fields contain large amounts of data, they are liable to be corrupted or truncated during transport across environments. The export-import function in MSY provides a secure way to transfer memo data type across systems and environments.

  • Export manager

You can search for and select the entities that must be exported, and generate an export data file containing these entities. In addition, you can view the status of the export process, generate a log, and save the log to any directory of your choice.

For more information, see Export Manager.

  • File transfer

You can transfer export data files between the development, test, and production environments using Microsoft Windows" copy and paste functions. So the number of data transports between the CRM servers in each environment is reduced.

  • Import manager

You can choose the data that you want to import from the export data file to the target system. You can also delete additional subdata in the target system without deleting the parent data.

For more information, see Import Manager.
